Amnesty International has called for the immediate release of over 1,000 #EndBadGovernance protesters currently in detention across Nigeria following recent hunger protests. The demonstrations, held between August 1 and 10, resulted in some violence, including looting and vandalism in various states.

On August 6, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun reported arrests of individuals linked to rioters who used foreign flags and demanded government changes in states like Kano, Kaduna, and Zamfara. Despite this, Amnesty International condemned the escalation of the crackdown, highlighting that more than 100 protesters have been arraigned in court on what the organization deems trumped-up charges.

In a statement posted on X, Amnesty International criticized the Nigerian authorities for intensifying their crackdown on peaceful demonstrators. The organization reiterated its demand for the unconditional release of all individuals detained for exercising their right to peaceful assembly, emphasizing that the Nigerian government must uphold the rights to freedom of expression and assembly.
