The Electronic Central Motor Registry (E-CMR) initiative by the Nigeria Police Force will guarantee that motorists will no longer be halted on the road for vehicle information verification.

This information was disclosed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a series of posts he shared on X on Thursday, emphasizing the potential advantages of the E-CMR. Adejobi highlighted the convenience and effectiveness of the “e-policing” innovation. He noted that under the leadership of Inspector-General Olukayode Egbetokun, the Electronic Central Motor Registry system has been introduced to enhance road safety and streamline the policing process.

He mentioned that this new system enables vehicle owners to register their vehicles online and offers a prompt response for emergencies.

“If your vehicle is registered with the NPF E-CMR and gets stolen, you can instantly flag it as stolen through your online profile,” the statement read.

He added that the system will notify all field officers across the country within seconds, enhancing the likelihood of quick recovery.

One of the posts highlighted the E-CMR’s elimination of paperwork, stating that”No more stopping to check papers—our officers are equipped with cutting-edge tech to verify documents in real-time.”

With the NPF’s new E-CMR system, you don’t need to carry around physical documents. Access all your vehicle info digitally—quick, easy, and secure,” it added.

Earlier this year, the IGP mandated the implementation of the digitized Central Motor Registry. He stated that this initiative aimed to modernize and digitalize the motor vehicle registration system while enhancing the nation’s safety and security framework. However, on July 15th, the IGP suspended the enforcement of the process, which was originally set to begin on July 29, 2024.

In a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, the decision to relax enforcement aims to facilitate extensive awareness campaigns that will emphasize the benefits and effectiveness of the e-CMR initiative. This initiative is designed to enhance the safety and security of all vehicle types, including motorcycles, by gathering data entered into the system by vehicle owners and using this information to flag vehicles that are reported stolen, among other advantages.
