As Nigeria celebrates its 64th anniversary as a nation, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, has stated that Africa’s largest country urgently requires rescue from “further decay.”

Obi made this statement on Tuesday via his X account, where he underscored the nation’s challenges in economic, social, and security sectors.

When we compare ourselves to countries that gained independence around the same time—before or after us—Nigeria stands out as a nation in decline, urgently in need of rescue from further decay,” he said.
“On this day, therefore, we must make a solemn commitment to build a nation that is truly independent from the state capture that has dragged it into failure and kept its people in suffering.”

The former Anambra governor expressed concern about what he views as Nigeria’s underperformance in critical areas of development, questioning whether the nation has genuinely enhanced the lives of its citizens.

Anniversary celebrations, whether for an individual or a country, provide a chance to reflect on past memories, celebrate achievements, look ahead to the future, and express gratitude. This is precisely what we are doing today as our beloved nation commemorates its 64th independence.

He also pointed out significant issues afflicting the country, such as widespread poverty, a failing education system, and a crippling debt burden.

The former presidential candidate called on all Nigerians to renew their commitment to creating a nation that is free from tribal disunity, religious discord, and corruption.

Obi said, “Our nation continues its dangerous dance on the edge of a precipice. We must create a nation free from tribal disunity and religious disharmony.
“We must build a New and Productive Nigeria that prioritizes the well-being of its citizens. That is the independence we should celebrate as a nation whose greatness remains Possible.”
