President Bola Tinubu has officially sworn in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria, following her confirmation by the Senate on September 25, 2024.

Justice Kekere-Ekun took her oath of office and signed the oath register during a ceremony held at the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja on Monday.

She succeeds Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who served from June 27, 2022, until his retirement on August 22, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70 years.

Monday’s ceremony was attended by three of Justice Kekere-Ekun’s predecessors, including the first female Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloma Mukhtar, as well as Justices Mahmud Mohammed and Walter Onnoghen, along with her immediate predecessor, Justice Ariwoola.

Also present in the Chambers were members of her family and other justices of the Supreme Court.

This marks the second time Kekere-Ekun has taken the oath of office in just five weeks. On August 23, prior to her confirmation by the Senate, President Tinubu had sworn her in as acting Chief Justice.
