The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the Federal Government to rescind the recent increase in petrol pump prices, calling it a harsh attack on the sensibilities of the Nigerian people.
In a statement released on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP criticized the recent petrol price increase, stating that it “shows a complete disregard for the well-being of the people, akin to pushing Nigerians to the brink and challenging them to react.” The statement emphasized that this hike, particularly at such a critical time, “is a significant trigger for crisis, as Nigerians are already struggling with the escalating economic hardship under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC.” Ologunagba further asserted that under Tinubu’s leadership, 150 million Nigerians have fallen below the poverty line.
He noted that businesses are collapsing daily amid an inflation rate exceeding 34 percent and an unemployment rate surpassing 40 percent. “The reckless increase in fuel prices, particularly at this moment, is a major catalyst for crisis, as Nigerians are already struggling with the escalating economic hardship imposed by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC,” the statement asserted.
“The APC government has consistently demonstrated an anti-people stance, showing indifference to the suffering of millions of Nigerians who can no longer afford basic necessities such as meals, medications, and essential support for their families due to the crippling cost of living driven by the thoughtless and irresponsible policies of the Tinubu administration.”
He further expressed concern, stating, “There appears to be no hope on the horizon under the current APC government, as major multinational companies continue to leave the country in large numbers due to poorly conceived and executed macroeconomic policies.”
In light of the dire situation facing our nation today, our Party questions what President Tinubu conveys to his foreign counterparts during his numerous trips abroad, especially in countries where leaders prioritize the welfare of their citizens.
“Nigerians will remember that the PDP has repeatedly offered constructive advice and recommendations for managing the economy, all of which the APC government has arrogantly disregarded in its failure.
“The PDP urges President Tinubu to prevent further socio-economic disarray by immediately reversing the latest provocative increase in fuel prices and reassessing all detrimental and burdensome policies enacted by the APC administration.”
Ologunagba further stated that with “effective, transparent, and innovative management of resources, economic potential, comparative advantage, and national refining capacity, petrol prices should not exceed N250 per litre in our country.”
