The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially announced that Augustine Eguavoen will take over as head coach of the Super Eagles for the upcoming Morocco 2025 campaign.
This decision follows complications stemming from stringent German tax regulations, which have hindered a potential agreement with experienced coach Bruno Labbadia.
Initially, the NFF had aimed to secure Labbadia, a seasoned coach with extensive experience in European football.
However, the complexities of German tax laws presented significant obstacles, ultimately leading to the breakdown of negotiations. The financial implications of these regulations created barriers that prevented the NFF from finalizing the contract with Labbadia.
With the deal for Labbadia off the table, the NFF has turned to Eguavoen, who previously served as the interim head coach of the Super Eagles.
Eguavoen’s familiarity with the team and his prior experience in guiding the squad position him as a suitable choice as they prepare for the crucial tournament. His leadership will be vital as the Super Eagles look to build on their past performances and aim for success on the continental stage.

Austin Eguavoen, a former international player and technical director, will lead the Super Eagles in their 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda this September.
This decision by Labbadia comes just a week before Nigeria’s crucial matches against Benin Republic, prompting the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to appoint Eguavoen as the interim coach.
As the Super Eagles prepare for Morocco 2025, Eguavoen’s appointment marks a commitment to continuity and stability within the team. The NFF is optimistic that under Eguavoen’s guidance, the players will tap into their potential and deliver a strong performance in the tournament. The focus will be on fostering teamwork, enhancing tactical awareness, and ensuring that the squad is well-prepared to face their opponents.
According to an official statement from the NFF, “In light of recent developments, Coach Augustine Eguavoen, the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation, will now oversee the Super Eagles for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures against Benin Republic in Uyo on September 7 and Rwanda in Kigali on September 10.”
