A new wave of protest has erupted at the University of Ibadan (UI) in Oyo State, as students express their opposition to the recent increase in school fees sanctioned by the institution’s governing council.
The demonstration began early on Friday, with students actively moving through the campus to ensure that no classes were conducted until the fees are lowered.
Reports indicate that the unrest stems from the governing council’s decision to approve the fee hike at the prestigious university, prompting students to take a stand against the financial burden it imposes.
Some students expressed their frustrations to reporters, revealing that their school fees have surged by over one hundred percent.
A student from the Department of Human Nutrition, who asked to remain anonymous due to concerns about possible repercussions, shared that fees for her department were set at N58,000 during the previous academic session.
To her astonishment, the new fee for the current session has jumped to N138,350.
“In our department, Human Nutrition, we paid N58,000 for the 2022/2023 session, and now for the 2023/2024 session, we are being asked to pay N138,350,” she stated.
