The organizers of the #EndBadGovernance movement in Lagos State have announced their intention to hold a memorial procession at the Lekki Toll Gate on Sunday, October 20, 2024, to honor the victims of the 2020 #EndSARS protests.
In a statement co-signed by representatives Hassan Soweto, Osugba Blessing, and Oloye Adegboyega-Adeniji, the group outlined that the memorial event will feature a procession, prayers, and a wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate those who lost their lives during the protests.
It reads, “To honour these martyrs of our collective struggle for liberty, the #EndBadGovernance movement in Lagos has decided to join other groups, victims of police brutality, their families, and well-meaning Nigerians at the Lekki Toll Gate for a memorial procession and rally.”
“Regrettably, the Federal Government, the military, and the Lagos State Government continue to deny that any killings took place at the Lekki Toll Gate, despite “overwhelming evidence” and a report from the Judicial Panel of Inquiry.
“As we march peacefully on Sunday, October 20, 2024, to honour the martyrs of #EndSARS, we will also continue to demand justice for all those who were killed and injured, and call for the release of all #EndBadGovernance protesters still in captivity or undergoing trial across the nation.”
The group urged Nigerians, particularly the youth, to come out in large numbers to honor the martyrs of the #EndSARS protest, which was sparked by years of police brutality, especially from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.
The statement highlighted that the #EndBadGovernance slogan emerged during the final days of the #EndSARS protests, reflecting a growing awareness among young Nigerians that simply disbanding the Special Anti-Robbery Squad would not address the wider issues of corruption and inequality that affect the country.
