FG to launch $1.1B NAPM initiative to stabilize food prices

The Federal Government is set to launch the National Agribusiness Policy Mechanism (NAPM) to strengthen agricultural productivity, stabilise food prices, and drive economic growth.

The NAPM is part of broader initiatives aimed at transforming the country’s agricultural sector through data-driven policies and public-private partnerships.

Speaking on Friday in Abuja during a meeting of the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit (PFSCU) Steering Committee at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Vice President Kashim Shettima said the initiative will align agricultural efforts across all government tiers through real-time data analytics.

“The Green Imperative Project (GIP) is an idea whose time has come. It has been in the incubation period for several years, and now it is coming to fruition; we have to get it right.

“We have had many interventions in this country in the past. We must make this work, and it’s the states that will drive the process,” the Vice President said.

Signed between Nigeria and Brazil on March 17, 2025, the Green Imperative Project (GIP) is a $1.1 billion initiative aimed to modernise 774 mid-sized Nigerian farms with Brazilian agricultural technologies, creating jobs and boosting productivity across the nation.

VP Shettima further said President Bola Tinubu has approved ₦15 billion for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to prepare for floods as the rainy season kicks in.

“This is one of the first proactive decisions by the government to prepare for the flooding season,” the Vice President noted.

Earlier, the Technical Assistant to the President on Agriculture and Executive Secretary of PFSCU, Marion Moon, explained that NAPM aims to address challenges of high food inflation and agricultural yields that lag 60 per cent behind global averages.

She revealed that the pilot survey for NAPM has been completed across 13 states, with a full launch planned for June 2025.

The NAPM, supported by data analytics partnerships and a digital platform under development, is designed to tackle food inflation, inefficient subsidies, and outdated farming practices, to give the country a unified framework to optimise public spending and drive sustainable rural development.

Those present at the meeting included Governors of Jigawa State, Umar Namadi, and Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji; Deputy Governors of Borno State, Umar Kadafur, and Ebonyi State, Patricia Onyemaechi Obila.

Others are Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari; Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Abdullahi; Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Finance; heads of agriculture and manufacturing private sector players, and international development partners.

Banditry: Hunters seek FG backing for physical, spiritual warfare

0

Amid rising insecurity across the country, hunters and farmers have called on the Federal Government to formally empower them to flush out bandits, Boko Haram insurgents, and other criminal elements hiding in forests.

The groups, including the Nigerian Forest Security Service, Professional Hunters Association of Nigeria, Agbekoya Farmers’ Society of Nigeria, and the Oodua Peoples Congress, insisted that they possessed the spiritual ability, knowledge, training, and presence in forests to combat terrorists.

There has been a resurgence of terror attacks in the country, particularly in Plateau and Benue states.

No fewer than 51 people were killed last week by gunmen in Zikke and Kakpa communities in the Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, two weeks after deadly clashes in another part of the state left many others dead.

Prior to last week’s attack, gunmen killed at least 52 people and displaced nearly 2,000 others after several days of attacks on six villages in Plateau.

The National Emergency Management Agency said 52 people were confirmed dead, while 22 others were taken to a hospital.

Reacting to the killings, President Bola Tinubu issued a marching order to security agencies to tackle insecurity in the country.

country.

Tinubu also ordered a complete overhaul of Nigeria’s security strategy.

But the groups said while forest-based crimes were on the rise, especially in border states, local hunters and guards remained a critical but underutilised force to stem the tide of insecurity.

Speaking with Saturday PUNCH, the Commandant General of the Nigerian Forest Security Service, Joshua Osatimehin, warned that failure to secure the forests would continue to pose a serious threat to national security.

Osatimehin stressed that without federal recognition and legislation, forest operatives could not take decisive actions against criminals in the bush.

He said, “We understand the forests; some of our operatives live there, but we cannot just attack the marauders without the government’s backing so that we will not be charged with genocide and other forms of illegal operations.

“As soon as the government decides to give us the necessary backup, this will give us the confidence to deploy all our arsenals – physically, spiritually, and otherwise to dislodge these people (bandits and kidnappers) because those causing this insecurity are few compared to Nigeria’s population. We can defeat them with the necessary backup and support from the government.

“If we have the logistics support and the security infrastructure at least at our level to man our forest points, these killings will drastically reduce.”

The commandant pointed out that porous borders were a major reason foreigners continued to infiltrate the country to wreak havoc.

“But our operatives work in these forests; we farm and hunt in these forests. This will make it easier to form a first line of defence before the military or the police can come in,” he added.

While acknowledging that some forest operatives had spiritual means of protection, Osatimehin insisted that lawful backing and proper training would be prioritised.

The National Secretary of the Professional Hunters Association of Nigeria, Danladi Perry, stressed the urgent need for intensified patrols and surveillance, especially along known forest routes often exploited by attackers.

“The spate of killings in Benue, Plateau and other northern states would have been prevented if the Federal Government had engaged professional hunters, forest guards and local vigilantes to man our forests, because most of the attackers’ route is the bush. We need to intensify patrols and surveillance. Of course, we are brave and ready for the task. We need support to facilitate and improve patrols. Also, the bushes around us should be checked regularly,” he added.

The Secretary-General of the Agbekoya Farmers’ Society of Nigeria, Adegbenro Ogunlana, said his men were already deploying spiritual means against insecurity across the South-West states to secure the region.

He noted that if not for the fetishes being made, there would have been serious problems.

Ogunlana stated, “They would have been picking us from our houses to kill us. We had our meeting at Shepeteri in Oyo State. The Ifa oracle instructed us to carry out certain sacrifices across South-West states because our people have a hand in the issues we are facing.

“We have arrested some individuals from our communities who were aiding these terrorists. They can’t operate without help from insiders.”

He further stated that the essence of the spiritual means was to restore peace in the region.

“We have turned to spiritual means. We’ve started from Kogi and Kwara, and we’ll extend to the South-West states. Though Kogi and Kwara are in the North, we have Yoruba communities there, and they are also affected by the security challenges.

“The problem with the Yoruba nation right now is the lack of a central leader. Our government does not want self-defence, but these people killing us work with these things.”

Responding to whether he would invoke spiritual means against insecurity, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, said such was a personal decision.

Adams, however, hinted that work was ongoing “beneath the surface.”

He said, “All I know is that the wave of insecurity is coming. It has started all over the country. If 70 per cent of people in Kwara State are Yoruba, then the issue is affecting us gradually.

“What happened in Ondo State, and part of Ekiti State, is giving us serious concern; we are having issues of skirmishes in this area.”

The Yoruba leader noted that he was consulting with a few elders about the situation.

“There is information that they have infiltrated Ibadan; notwithstanding, I am discussing with a few elders. We also have an intelligence report that these terrorists have infiltrated Yoruba land. They have infiltrated our communities, especially the ones with solid minerals.

“This is because they are privy to the information of the Ministry of Minerals to know the communities that have lucrative solid minerals. Most of the communities they have attacked are the ones with solid minerals. Our politicians aren’t doing anything about the issue.”

On his part, the Commander of Patrol and Guards, Nigeria Forest Security Service in charge of North-Central, Alhaji Muhammad Ahmed, stated that the security challenges bedeviling the country would be a thing of the past if President Tinubu assented to a bill before him.

According to him, the Nigeria Forest Security Service, formerly known as Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Service, has spiritual solutions to Nigeria’s security challenges.

While in Paris, President Tinubu held a high-level meeting with the United States Department of State’s Senior Advisor for Africa, Mr. Massad Boulos.

His discussions with the US official, it was gathered, focused on deepening bilateral collaboration aimed at enhancing regional security and promoting sustainable economic development across Africa.

A key aspect of the talks included joint efforts to advance lasting peace in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with emphasis on multilateral cooperation and the role of regional stakeholders.

The meeting underscored Nigeria’s ongoing engagement with international partners in addressing complex security and development challenges across Africa.

Arsenal knock out holders Real Madrid to reach champions league semis

Arsenal staved off Champions League holders Real Madrid’s superstars and rich history of unlikely comebacks to snatch a 2-1 victory on Wednesday and reach the semi-finals with a superb 5-1 aggregate triumph.

The Gunners’ 3-0 quarter-final first leg triumph last week gave them a vital cushion in the Spanish capital as they made the final four for the first time since 2009, where they will face Paris Saint-Germain.

Bukayo Saka, who missed a first-half penalty, sent Arsenal ahead and although Vinicius Junior levelled the 15-time winners were never close to making up the deficit.

Gabriel Martinelli rubbed salt in their wounds with a stoppage-time winner for Arsenal, who have never lifted the Champions League trophy.

“We knew we were going to suffer but we knew we were going to win,” Declan Rice, who netted two stunning free-kicks in the first leg, told TNT Sports.

“It’s such a special night for this club, it’s a historic night for this club… we want to win this competition.”

Los Blancos, far more brittle than when they won a Champions League and La Liga double last season, were convinced they could turn the game around but created too little against Arsenal’s tight defence.

The Premier League side held their nerve to reach the semi-finals for only the third time in their history.

“It’s a difficult moment… it was a difficult game, we didn’t have all the chances we would have liked,” Madrid’s Lucas Vazquez told Movistar.

“We needed a bit more with the ball, maybe a bit more patience to be able to break through a very well organised defence — they did their job.”

Kylian Mbappe chested home in the opening stages but was clearly offside, with the forward gesturing to the crowd to turn up the volume to create the fabled aura which helps Madrid pull off near-impossible feats at the Santiago Bernabeu.

David Alaba was booked for hacking down Saka as Madrid tried to add the grit they badly lacked in their first leg demolition in London, and the Arsenal winger also had a drive fielded well by Thibaut Courtois.

Arsenal were awarded a penalty seemingly out of the blue when the VAR booth instructed French referee Francois Letexier to review an incident from an earlier corner.

Raul Asencio pulled back Arsenal forward Mikel Merino in the area and Letexier pointed to the spot, to the bemusement of the home crowd.

Saka penalty saved
Saka stepped up to take it but his poorly-executed Panenka, skewing off to the left, was saved by Courtois.

It spurred Real Madrid on and soon they had a penalty of their own, when Mbappe hit the turf after Rice tussled with him.

However after a lengthy VAR review Letexier was called to take a second look and he then decided Arsenal’s two-goal first leg hero Rice had not fouled the French superstar.

The breaks in play, along with Arsenal’s dallying at every opportunity, disrupted Madrid’s momentum and they struggled to threaten Gunners stopper David Raya.

For all of Madrid’s bluster the goalkeeper did not need to make a save in the first half.

Martin Odegaard, facing his former employers whom he joined as a ‘wonderkid’ a decade ago, helped forge Arsenal’s opening goal after 65 minutes.

The Norwegian linked with Merino, who slipped Saka in behind and the Englishman made amends for his penalty blunder with an ice-cool dinked finish.

Four goals ahead in the tie Arsenal thought their work was done, with defender William Saliba not concentrating on the edge of his box in possession.

Vinicius stole the ball away from him and beat the out-of-position Raya to level, two minutes after Saka’s opener.

Madrid’s increasingly slim hopes were dashed when Mbappe limped off with an ankle problem with 15 minutes remaining, and Martinelli made sure with a cool finish after Merino set him up.

Real Madrid fans demand “Remontada” ahead of Arsenal clash

With key players returning, hopes rise for a comeback against Arsenal in the Champions League.
Real Madrid fans are rallying behind their team as they prepare for a monumental challenge against Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League. Just 48 hours before the crucial second leg of their quarter-final tie, supporters stormed the club’s training base in Valdebebas, displaying banners that boldly proclaimed “Remontada,” which translates to “comeback” in English. This passionate display of support comes after Real Madrid found themselves in a daunting position, trailing 3-0 from the first leg held at the Emirates Stadium.

The match is set for April 16, 2025, and the stakes couldn’t be higher for Los Blancos. Historically, overturning a three-goal deficit in the Champions League is an uphill battle, with only four teams having achieved such a feat in the tournament’s storied history. Nevertheless, the Madridistas are holding onto hope, especially with the return of key players like Aurélien Tchouameni and Dani Ceballos, who missed the first leg due to injury.

Real Madrid’s task is undeniably daunting, but as history has shown, comebacks are possible. The last time a team managed to turn around a three-goal deficit in the Champions League was in 2019 when Liverpool stunned Barcelona with a remarkable 4-0 victory at Anfield, progressing 4-3 on aggregate. Similarly, Deportivo La Coruña achieved the impossible against AC Milan in 2004, overcoming a 4-1 first-leg loss to win 5-4 on aggregate. Barcelona also made headlines with their own comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, winning 6-5 after losing the first leg 4-0.

Despite the odds, Real Madrid is no stranger to dramatic comebacks. Their storied rivalry with Barcelona has often featured legendary matches that have defined the term “Remontada” in football culture. Fans are hopeful that the spirit of their club will inspire another unforgettable moment on the pitch.

The atmosphere at the Santiago Bernabéu is expected to be electric, with fans rallying behind their team, urging them to believe in the impossible. Coach Carlo Ancelotti has emphasized the importance of a strong start and maintaining composure throughout the match. “We have to believe in ourselves and play with confidence,” he stated during a recent press conference. “The fans are behind us, and we need to channel that energy into our performance on the pitch. Every player must step up and give their all for the badge.”

As the clock ticks down to kickoff, the excitement builds. Arsenal, who will be looking to secure their spot in the semi-finals, are not to be underestimated. They come into the match with a solid performance in the first leg and will aim to capitalize on any weaknesses displayed by the Madrid side. However, the Gunners cannot afford to be complacent, as a motivated Real Madrid team could pose significant threats.

In preparation for the match, both teams have been analyzing their strategies. Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, has noted the importance of maintaining a strong defensive line while being opportunistic in attack. “We know what we are up against,” Arteta remarked. “Real Madrid is a team with a rich history and a winning mentality. We must be prepared for everything they throw at us, but we also have our game plan to follow.”

The fans’ rallying cry of “Remontada” resonates deeply within the walls of the Bernabéu, echoing the hopes and dreams of a club that has seen its share of ups and downs. As the players take to the field, they will carry the weight of their supporters’ expectations, with the banners waving high in the stands, a reminder of the belief that anything is possible.

With the match just around the corner, anticipation is palpable. Will Real Madrid defy the odds and script another chapter in their illustrious history? Or will Arsenal hold firm and secure their place in the semi-finals? One thing is for certain: the stage is set for a thrilling encounter that will keep fans on the edge of their seats.

As the final preparations take place, the footballing world watches closely, eager to see if history will repeat itself or if a new narrative will unfold. The beauty of football lies in its unpredictability, and as the players step onto the pitch, the realm of possibility is wide open. The countdown to kickoff has begun, and the air is thick with excitement and anticipation for what promises to be an unforgettable night of Champions League football.

Portable remanded, granted N1 million bail

An Upper Area Court in Ilorin, Kwara State, has granted N1 million bail to controversial street-hop artiste Okikiola Badmus, popularly known as Portable.

PREMIUM TIMES reported that the Ogun-born singer was apprehended concerning allegations involving Fuji star Saheed Osupa.

The dispute arose after Osupa reported one of Portable’s songs, ‘Fuji Shakushaku’, for copyright infringement, leading to its removal from Apple Music. Osupa also alleged that Portable defamed him in a live broadcast on Instagram on 19 March.

In the video, Portable reportedly accused Osupa of sabotaging his music career.

The 31-year-old singer was arraigned on multiple charges, including criminal defamation, cyberstalking, inciting public disturbance, and criminal intimidation on Monday.

The court presiding over the case ordered that “ZaZoo Zehh Cronner” be released on bail upon the provision of two sureties: one must be either the Chairman or Secretary of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), and the other must own property within a Government Reserved Area (GRA) with a valid Certificate of Occupancy.

Despite the court’s ruling, Portable was remanded in custody after failing to meet the bail conditions as of press time.

Complaints
Osupa claimed the statements were intended to damage his reputation, incite public hatred, and cause a breach of peace.

Following an investigation by the State Intelligence Department of the Nigeria Police, Portable was arrested in Abeokuta, Ogun State, and transferred to Ilorin.

The police filed charges under various laws, including Sections 392 (Criminal Defamation), 114 (Inciting Disturbance), and 397 (Criminal Intimidation) of the Penal Code; relevant provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015; and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law, 2020.

The investigating police officer, Adeniyi James, an assistant superintendent of police, confirmed that Portable was charged based on directives from police authorities.

The magistrate, Sunday Adeniyi, adjourned the case to 30 April.

He advised all parties to maintain decorum as proceedings continue.

Portable remains in custody until he satisfies the bail conditions.

This is not Portable’s first brush with the law. In a separate case just over a month ago, he was arraigned in Ogun State for allegedly assaulting government officials and obstructing their duties.

He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail.

Madrid dream comeback vs Arsenal,

Before the first kick, it was unthinkable. Perennial European champions were up against an Arsenal team that have never won the Champions League. The script, for many, was already written – Real Madrid will defeat the Gunners. It was only a matter of how many goals the Galaticos would score in North London. But after 75 minutes, the score board read differently: Arsenal 3- Real Madrid 0!

It only took Declan Rice’s free-kick masterclass and a cool finish from Mikel Merino to send the Emirates crowd into raptures in a night that would go down in the Gunners’ folklore. Arsenal doing the unthinkable by defeating the reigning European champions gives them one leg into the semi-final of the competition.

Despite the deficit, Real Madrid believe a miracle will happen in the return fixture at the Santiago Benabeu, referencing past comebacks. That reverse game on Wednesday will define many things about an Arsenal side yearning for their first Champions League crown. The big question is: can Real Madrid pull off a remontada – comeback?

Toni Kroos lays down the ideal plan for Real Madrid to turn it around vs Arsenal

Real Madrid’s first leg showdown against Arsenal was an utterly disgusting display of football for Los Blancos fans to witness. The game was an abomination in the face of the visitors that they would remember for weeks if not months.

Arsenal completely outperformed Real Madrid on all tactical fronts, including individual player performances. And the second leg at Santiago Bernabeu is much awaited right now. A widespread consensus on an expected return is neither novel nor silly.

Real Madrid have a history of turning things around for the better. They are famed for comebacks and late-arriving goals that were unattainable until they were achieved. It is, so to speak, in Los Blancos’ DNA.

Toni Kroos suggests the plan for Real Madrid to make a comeback
Toni Kroos is a legend who has been involved in several spectacular comebacks in recent years. His contribution to the club is not new, either. He understands what it takes to make a return at a critical stage in the world’s most prestigious club title. He understands what is at risk, and he knows which locks to unlock in order to perform the perfect counterattack.

In his podcast Einfach mal Luppen, the former midfielder discussed the first leg versus Arsenal and expressed his thoughts on it. He discussed the prospect of a comeback and sketched out a draft strategy for the squad to pursue.

Kroos said, “The emotional factor will be a huge decider vs Arsenal. The team has to decide it in the first 15 minutes. That’s how it should go ideally. You need to make Arsenal, who have no UCL Quarter-Final experience, especially not in Madrid, think: ‘woah, it’s not over yet’.”

The foregoing comment by the German contains just pragmatism and truth. Among all the buzz about a motivational video being made, Kroos’ proposal appears to be the most realistic and game-oriented. It is true that Real Madrid will undoubtedly execute a comeback if they score one or two goals in the first fifteen minutes of the match.

Arsenal has never experienced Champions League triumph, while Real Madrid reign supreme. The second leg cannot be released so simply.

Air Peace to bring back Nigerian girls trafficked to Ivory Coast

Chairman of the Air Peace Group, Allen Onyema, has promised to bring back underage girls trafficked to the Ivory Coast free of charge.

In a statement on the company’s X handle, Onyema called for collective efforts to discourage trafficking, emphasising its inhumane and ungodly nature.

He expressed deep concern and condemnation over the recent discovery of Nigerian underage girls trafficked to the Ivory Coast, as highlighted by activist VeryDarkMan.

In his words, “We should discourage trafficking of any kind. It is inhumane and callous. It is ungodly and a good example of man’s inhumanity to man. We, in Air Peace, are ready to bring our fellow citizens back home free of charge.

“Besides that, we will send all of them to Duchess International Hospital in Ikeja for free medical examination and treatment.

“While we implore the Nigerian Embassy in Cote D’Ivoire to assemble them and reach out to us, we equally call on the Federal Government to take charge of their education while reuniting them with their families.”

Uromi killings: FG, Edo govt set up fact-finding committee

The Federal Government, in collaboration with the Edo State Government, have set up a fact-finding Committee to look into the circumstances surrounding the recent killings of 16 Kano-bound Travellers in Uromi, the administrative headquarters of Esan North-East Local Government Area.

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, disclosed this on Thursday when he received a high-powered delegation from Kano State, led by the Deputy Governor of the State, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo at the Government House in Benin City.

Okpebholo said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not happy over what happened in Uromi and he is determined to ensure the State and nation are safe for everybody to live and do business.

“This incident has opened our eyes and we are ready to address a lot of issues about the country and how to make life better for us all. The president is not happy with what has happened and he wants us to see to the end of this dastardly act,” the governor said.

“The President personally wants to see to the end of this issue. I want to also let you know that the President and Edo State Government have set up a committee to find out the remote cause(s) of the incident and put a lasting solution to the issue.

“This report you have submitted will actually help us so that we do not have to worry you. A lot will be done and made open to the public to know what the committee is doing on the issue.

“We are a peace-loving people in Edo State. We love those living with us in the State. Kano and Edo State have been collaborating in the area of commerce and industry.”

The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo appreciated Governor Okpebholo for his earlier visit to Kano.

He stated that the delegation was in Edo State to thank the Governor for the peaceful steps he took when he came to Kano State in regards to the Uromi incident.

“The Governor of Kano State set up a Committee to screen and verify, to establish the names, numbers, next of kin and those who survived the attack. We have been able to carry out these activities and we have come out with a report which we are here to submit to your Excellency.

“You promised us that justice will be done and we believe you on this Mr. Governor. We need a transparent process on this issue. Sixteen persons lost their dear lives from five local government areas of Kano State,” he stated.

Present during the visit were the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Hon. Dennis Idahosa; Speaker Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Blessing Agbebaku; security heads in the State, senior government officials, both from Kano and Edo State, among others.

Governor Okpebholo and the delegation from Kano also visited Uromi, where they met with members of the Hausa Community in the area.
