Obasanjo opted to leave Army when asked to succeed Murtala ―IBB

.Narrates how he disarmed Dimka during 1976 coup

FORMER Military President, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has disclosed that former President Olusegun Obasanjo opted to leave the Army after he was asked to succeed former Head of State, Murtala Muhammed, following the failure of the 1976 coup that claimed Murtala’s life.

IBB made this disclosure in his autobiography, A Journey in Service while giving accounts of the events that followed the attempt to forcefully take over the Murtala’s military administration by a group of mutineers led by Lieutenant-Colonel Bukar Dimka.

Following Murtala’s death, IBB, in chapter 5 of his book entitled “The Murtala Muhammed Years,” narrated that the Supreme Military Council met the following day to discuss the succession plan but the council was divided over the choice of Obasanjo and Theophilus Danjuma, both of whom, at the time, were Lieutenant-Generals and most senior military officer.

IBB disclosed that though the pendulum of the SMC swung in Danjuma’s direction, he rejected the offer and suggested that Obasanjo, who was Murtala’s deputy and a ‘senior’ Lieutenant-General, should succeed Murtala.

According to him, Obasanjo, instead, opted to retire from the Army to pave the way for Danjuma’s ascension as Head of State, but such move led to a stalemate as Danjuma rejected the suggestion, insisting that Obasanjo should succeed the late Head of State.

IBB narrated on page 99 of his book: “The next day, the SMC met in Lagos to pick a successor to General Muhammed. We knew it would be either General Obasanjo or General Danjuma since, as Lieutenant-Generals, they were the most senior. As I recall, the pendulum swung in favour of General Danjuma at the start of the deliberations. Everyone present, including Obasanjo, thought Danjuma should take over.

“But somehow, Danjuma cast his lot with Obasanjo, insisting that as Muhammed’s deputy and a ‘senior’ Lieutenant-General, Obasanjo should succeed Murtala Muhammed. Obasanjo refused and offered, if I recall accurately, to retire from the Army to enable Danjuma to emerge as Head of State. There appeared to be a momentary stalemate. But that soon faded away. Faced with the insistence of Danjuma, everyone caved in, and Obasanjo accepted the challenge to succeed Murtala.

“With the question of the Head of State settled, the choice of substantive Deputy to Obasanjo and Chief of Staff (Supreme Headquarters) had to be resolved. I don’t recall that it was tabled before the SMC. But I suspect that General Danjuma, as Chief of Army Staff and ‘de facto’ deputy to Obasanjo during those early days, decided, presumably after consultations, to name Lt-Col. Shehu Musa Yar’Adua as Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters. And in an exercise that would have rattled a few within the military, especially those senior to him, Yar’Adua was promptly promoted to Brigadier and, subsequently, Major-General.”

The elder stateman also narrated how he disarmed late Dimka and other mutineers who had taken over the Radio House, adding that in the ensuing gunfight, Dimka escaped but his aide-de-camp, 2nd Lt Garba, was killed among other casualties.

“Meanwhile, I returned to General Danjuma to give him a report of my encounter with Dimka. Danjuma was furious. He ordered me back to the Radio House with a reiteration of his earlier instructions to ‘flush Dimka out of place immediately.

“I returned to Radio House with Chris Ugokwe, better equipped and prepared. By now, we had been joined by, among others, Mike Otuwa, James Ojokojo, John Shagaya and Jack Iketubosin.

“But first, I had to reach out to my friend and classmate, Sani Sami, who commanded the Brigade of Guards, to handle a difficult assignment. The Brigade of Guards’ barracks provided easy access to the Radio House. But again, I had to be careful since I wasn’t sure whether the Brigade was still loyal to the government.

“Sani Sami and I consulted and agreed that there should be minimum destruction. And that we would do what we were taught as cadets in situations involving a civilian population to ensure that civilians got out of the way and didn’t get injured.

“Once that was done, we moved in, cordoned off the area and engaged the mutineers in a gun battle. There were casualties in the ensuing armed confrontation, including Dimka’s ADC, 2nd Lt Garba. Also, one of the other vital plotters, Major Ibrahim Rabo, was arrested by Major Yomi Williams as he tried to escape and was promptly taken to the Bonny camp for interrogation. But, somehow, Dimka, quite inexplicably to this day, managed to escape from the scene unharmed,” IBB recalled.

He added that “Later that evening, the Federal government announced that the coup attempt had been quashed and declared seven days of national mourning in Murtala’s honour. The next day, February 14, General Muhammed was buried in Kano at a ceremony witnessed by thousands of mourners and members of the SMC, including Major-General Bisalla, who would later be implicated in the coup attempt.

“The national outpouring of grief and support following the assassination of Murtala was unprecedented. In his short six months in office, Murtala Muhammed had become a folk hero, endearing himself to many. Angry, grief-stricken students of the Universities of Ibadan, Benin and Lagos held violent street demonstrations in protest against his killers.

“Organised Labour movements, civil society organisations and even market women issued statements of solidarity for the Murtala Muhammed administration. Afterwards, the GOC of the 1 Division in Kaduna, Major-General Alani Akinrinade, issued a strong statement of support from Lagos for Murtala, and virtually all other military installations in the country followed suit by disassociating themselves from the coup.”

Tinubu backs fintech firms as flutterwave seeks listing on NGX

President Bola Tinubu said his administration will support businesses in the financial technology sector that provide payment infrastructure services for Nigerians and Africans.

He said this when he received the leadership of Flutterwave and Alami Capital in Abuja on Saturday afternoon, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said.

Flutterwave boss Olugbenga Agboola and other stakeholders in the company Adeleke Adekoya, Oluwabankole Falade and Mitesh Popat represented the fintech firm at the meeting while Oluseun Olufemi-White represented Alami Capital as its chief executive.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun led the delegation to meet President Tinubu. Dr. Armstrong Ume Takang, the Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), and Dr. Inuwa Kashifu Abdullahi, the Director General/ Chief Executive Officer of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), also attended.

President Tinubu said Nigeria is genuinely open to business, and as President, he is determined to remove all obstacles to allow companies to thrive.

He commended Flutterwave’s commitment to building capacity in the digital economy sector, especially as it is being made possible by energetic, young Nigerians. He said he is honoured to be the President of a country with such a youthful and resourceful population.

He said the leadership Flutterwave provides in the digital world is what Nigeria needs today to grow its economy and make life easier for most of its population.

Edun said Flutterwave has made significant progress since its establishment 10 years ago. It has created jobs and helped diversify the economy by providing innovative digital platforms and payment services in Nigeria and across Africa.

Agboola said the company has made it easy for Nigerians to pay for some global services with Naira and provided payment platforms for Nigerians in the diaspora who are willing to send money to families and relatives in the country.

He said Flutterwave, valued at over $3 billion, is a Nigerian export and brand employing over 1,000 Nigerians.

He said the company seeks to be listed on the Nigerian Exchange and solicited the President’s support.

‘Soft’ Man Utd have to survive this season, says Amorim

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim described his side as “soft” despite fighting back from 2-0 down to salvage a 2-2 draw at Everton on Saturday.

United looked destined for a ninth defeat in 13 Premier League games when goals from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure gave Everton a deserved half-time lead.

However, captain Bruno Fernandes inspired a fightback from the visitors to at least prevent another defeat for Amorim’s men.

Fernandes curled in a free-kick with United’s first shot on target on 72 minutes.

Manuel Ugarte levelled shortly afterwards after another Fernandes set-piece delivery was only partially cleared.

United, though, were fortunate to escape Goodison Park with a point as Everton had a penalty controversially ruled out after a VAR review in stoppage time.

The Red Devils remain down in 15th, but are 13 points clear of the bottom three and should be safe from the embarrassment of relegation.

“The worst part is that we are losing the ball without pressure and we are not doing what we need to do. We were soft”, said Amorim, who has taken just 15 points from a possible 45 since taking charge in November.

“In this moment, we need to focus on day-by-day. We need to survive this season and then we can think ahead.

“I don’t want to just say the negative part. In the second half, we were close to winning this game.”

In contrast to United’s struggles under new management, David Moyes’ return has propelled Everton towards safety.

The Toffees were in a relegation battle when the former United boss returned last month, but they have taken 14 points from the last six games to surge up to 12th.

Moyes was disappointed not to take all three points after a dominant first half but gave credit for the manner in which Fernandes helped turn the tide after the break.

“We should have been probably three up, I think if we’d been three up we wouldn’t be shamed by that at all,” said the Scot.

“To go 2-0 up was great, but 2-0 is always a dangerous position to be in as a manager. Manchester United have got nothing to lose but to come in and have a go.

“I don’t think it was as much as what we lacked, I thought Bruno played well. They dropped him deeper and he got on the ball much more and we found that a bit more difficult to deal with at the time.”

Moyes, though, was left baffled at the late decision to instruct referee Andy Madley to review his on-field award of a penalty when Ashley Young was pulled back by a combination of Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt.

“I thought the on-field decision looked the correct decision,” added Moyes.

“I’m a bit surprised he was asked to go to VAR because I thought that it looked difficult to change your mind on that.

“But I think when they go to VAR you very rarely get them to change their mind. It’s as if they think on-pitch, the people who are seeing it on the television see much more and understand more.”

Arsenal lose to West Ham in huge blow to premier league title hopes

0

Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge suffered a massive blow as the 10-man Gunners were beaten 1-0 at home by lowly West Ham on Saturday.

Jarrod Bowen headed in the only goal just before half-time and an injury-hit Arsenal had no reply after Myles Lewis-Skelly was sent off on 73 minutes.

Defeat leaves second-placed Arsenal still eight points adrift of leaders Liverpool.

With leaders Liverpool not in action until Sunday’s trip to Manchester City, Arsenal had a chance to close the gap in the title race with victory at the Emirates Stadium.

But Mikel Arteta’s side stumbled to a first loss in 16 league games as Jarrod Bowen netted West Ham’s first half winner before the Gunners had Myles Lewis-Skelly sent off after the interval.

Second-placed Arsenal, whose last top-flight defeat came at Newcastle in November, are eight points behind Liverpool, who would move a massive 11 points clear if they beat spluttering City.

After coming off the bench to score twice in the closing stages of last weekend’s win at Leicester, Spain midfielder Mikel Merino started for injury-hit Arsenal as a makeshift striker.

But Arsenal’s lack of cutting edge in the absence of Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka was exposed when Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s pin-point cross was headed in by Jarrod Bowen in the 44th minute.

There was more misery for Arsenal in the 73rd minute when Lewis-Skelly brought down Mohammed Kudus as the West Ham forward surged away on the halfway line.

Lewis-Skelly was initially shown a yellow card but the defender’s punishment was increased to a red after referee Craig Pawson consulted the pitchside monitor.

House of reps committee rejects 31 states creation proposal

The House of Representatives Committee on Constitutional Amendment has rejected all 31 proposals for the creation of states, citing failure to meet constitutional requirements.

The House received proposals for the creation of 31 new states on February 6, 2025.

However, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, announced that none of the 31 requests for state creation in Nigeria met the constitutional requirements for consideration.

Kalu, who also chairs the House Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, disclosed this on Friday at a two-day retreat in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.

The retreat was organised by the 10th House of Representatives in partnership with the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) and supported by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO).

It aimed to assess constitutional amendment proposals and determine the next steps in the review process.

“Although we have received 31 requests for state creation, none of these requests met the constitutional requirements for amendment,” Kalu stated.

Despite this setback, the committee has extended the deadline for submissions to March 5, 2025, allowing communities to revise their proposals.

Kalu hinted that further extensions might be considered depending on the retreat’s resolutions.

Beyond state creation, Kalu revealed that the House Committee is reviewing 151 constitutional amendment bills aimed at addressing governance challenges in Nigeria.

“Some of the bills have passed the second reading, while others are still at the first stage,” he noted.

As the review process continues, communities seeking state creation must meet the constitutional requirements to be considered for approval.

Babangida makes u-turn 32 years after, says MKO Abiola won June 12 election

Thirty-two years after his controversial annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, Nigeria’s former Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida, admitted for the first time that the late philanthropist and democracy hero Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola won the election.

The startling revelation was contained in Babangida’s 420-page memoir titled, ‘A Journey in Service: An Autobiography of Ibrahim Babangida’ which was launched in Abuja on Thursday with continental and national dignitaries in attendance.

The book reviewer, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, said the “evil genius” and “Maradona” as Babangida was nicknamed answered the question as to whether Abiola won the June 12 election or not in his book.

“Although I am on record to have stated after the election that Abiola may not have won the election, upon further reflection, and a closer examination of all available facts, particularly the detailed election results which are published as an appendix to this book, there was no doubt that MKO Abiola won the June 12 elections,” Babangida admitted in his book.

“Upon closer examination of the original collated figure from the 110 polling booths nationwide, it was clear that he satisfied the two main requirements for winning the presidential election – mainly majority votes and geographical spread – having obtained 8,128,720 against Tofa’s 5,848,247 votes and securing the mandatory of one-third of the votes cast in 28 states of the Federation including Abuja.”

Babangida’s admittance lent credence to the initial submission of former President Olusegun Obasanjo who said years ago that if not for “bad belle” – Nigerian colloquial for bad blood, MKO Abiola would have become Nigeria’s President after the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

The annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election between Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and his main challenger Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention (NRC) sparked protests and unrest nationwide.

Buoyed by the incontrovertible evidence of his electoral victory, Abiola declared himself as president. He was not only denied his mandate but was imprisoned by the military regime of Sani Abacha who was Babangida’s chief of defence staff. The political colossus died in troubling and deeply suspicious circumstances in detention on July 7, 1998.

The credibility or otherwise of the poll has dominated political discussions for decades with pro-democracy movement National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) and regional socio-political group Afenifere relentlessly demanding a remedy for the “injustice” done to Abiola and the Yoruba people of the South-West zone of Nigeria.

As a sort of remedy or compensation, in 2018, then President Muhammadu Buhari moved Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12 in honour of Abiola and to remind all Nigerians of one of the freest elections in the nation’s history. The day is to celebrate the ideals of democracy since the beginning of the Fourth Republic 25 years ago.

Babangida, in his memoir, said he was gratified that Buhari recognised Abiola as a former head of state.

The book launch has some of the most decorated men in attendance including former Presidents and Heads of State Goodluck Jonathan, Yakubu Gowon, and Abdulsalami Abubakar as well as former Vice Presidents Atiku Abubakar and Namadi Sambo.

President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima were also present. Billionaire businesspersons including Aliko Dangote, Abdulsamad Rabiu, and Folorunsho Alakija, among others, were not left out of the roll call of the who’s who.

While former President Muhammadu Buhari was represented at the event, Obasanjo was conspicuously absent from the book launch. Ghana’s former President Nana Akufo-Addo was also spotted at the event.

Jonathan, Tinubu, Gowon, Abdulsalami, Akufo-Addo, others attend IBB’s book launch

The launch of a memoir by former military president Ibrahim Babangida is taking place in Abuja.

Several leaders – past and present – in the country and beyond are attending the event.

President Bola Tinubu; ex-president Goodluck; former Ghanaian president Nana Akufo-Addo; a former Head of State Yakubu Gowon; Abdulsalami Abubakar among others are present at the event.

Lagos assembly denies rumoured defection of 27 APC members to LP

0

The Lagos State House of Assembly has denied the rumoured defection of 27 of its members from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the opposition Labour Party (LP).

In a statement on Wednesday, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy and Security, Ogundipe Olukayode, said reports (not by Channels Television) insinuating the defection of members of the Assembly are “false, misleading, and a deliberate attempt to misinform the public”.

The Assembly also said the rumoured defection was aimed to “sow discord and confusion within the Assembly and among the good people of Lagos State”.

Earlier on Monday, armed security officers drawn from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services were at the hallowed chamber, allegedly preventing the Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, from gaining entrance till hours later. When she finally presided over plenary, she became tearful and emotional as lawmakers passed a vote of confidence in her.

The state legislature has been embroiled in a leadership tussle for weeks following the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as the speaker of the Assembly and the election of Meranda.

While over 36 pro-Meranda lawmakers in the 40-member Assembly pledged loyalty to the first female speaker, Obasa has insisted that his removal was illegal and has gone to court to challenge the process.

The Assembly said the leadership tussle in the House is purely internal matters. “These events in no way suggest any intention by members to leave the party. We emphasise, without any ambiguity, that no member of the Assembly is contemplating defection,” the Assembly said.

“We were elected under the Leadership of the ruling party. The ruling party remains united and focused on delivering its mandate to the people of Lagos State. The falsehood being spread originates from agents of destabilisation who seek to create unnecessary tension and division within the Assembly.”

Mbappe hat-trick as Real Madrid knock Man City out of champions league

0

Kylian Mbappe struck a brilliant hat-trick for Champions League holders Real Madrid in a 3-1 win over Manchester City on Wednesday, helping Los Blancos reach the last 16 with a 6-3 aggregate victory.

Pep Guardiola’s side suffered a painful early exit without laying a glove on the completely dominant 15-time record winners until Nico Gonzalez tapped home in stoppage time.

French superstar Mbappe broke the deadlock with a lob in the fourth minute and netted a fine second after combining with his attacking partners as the English side were sliced open.

The striker, in sensational form after a slow start to life at Madrid, completed his treble in the second half with a low strike from the edge of the box to reach seven goals in the competition this season in 10 appearances.

City, who won the competition in 2023, were a far cry from their best as has been the case for much of their campaign.

Guardiola was dealt bad news before the game with Haaland, who netted twice in the first leg, named on the bench after suffering a knock at the weekend against Newcastle.

By contrast, Real Madrid welcomed Antonio Rudiger back from injury and he slotted seamlessly into defence, with Aurelien Tchouameni restored to his preferred midfield slot.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side performed almost flawlessly in the first half and took the lead in the opening stages.

Mbappe shrugged off Ruben Dias and lofted the ball over City goalkeeper Ederson after young centre-back Raul Asencio played him in with a long pass.

John Stones limped off for the visitors a few minutes later in another blow for the Premier League champions.

Fede Valverde had a shot deflected narrowly wide and Ederson saved from Mbappe after Tchouameni sent him dashing in on goal with another ball over the top.
