Mbappe hat-trick as Real Madrid knock Man City out of champions league

0

Kylian Mbappe struck a brilliant hat-trick for Champions League holders Real Madrid in a 3-1 win over Manchester City on Wednesday, helping Los Blancos reach the last 16 with a 6-3 aggregate victory.

Pep Guardiola’s side suffered a painful early exit without laying a glove on the completely dominant 15-time record winners until Nico Gonzalez tapped home in stoppage time.

French superstar Mbappe broke the deadlock with a lob in the fourth minute and netted a fine second after combining with his attacking partners as the English side were sliced open.

The striker, in sensational form after a slow start to life at Madrid, completed his treble in the second half with a low strike from the edge of the box to reach seven goals in the competition this season in 10 appearances.

City, who won the competition in 2023, were a far cry from their best as has been the case for much of their campaign.

Guardiola was dealt bad news before the game with Haaland, who netted twice in the first leg, named on the bench after suffering a knock at the weekend against Newcastle.

By contrast, Real Madrid welcomed Antonio Rudiger back from injury and he slotted seamlessly into defence, with Aurelien Tchouameni restored to his preferred midfield slot.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side performed almost flawlessly in the first half and took the lead in the opening stages.

Mbappe shrugged off Ruben Dias and lofted the ball over City goalkeeper Ederson after young centre-back Raul Asencio played him in with a long pass.

John Stones limped off for the visitors a few minutes later in another blow for the Premier League champions.

Fede Valverde had a shot deflected narrowly wide and Ederson saved from Mbappe after Tchouameni sent him dashing in on goal with another ball over the top.

Osun: Six killed, scores injured in LG takeover bid

•Stay away from LG secretariats, Adeleke tells Osun residents

•Sacked Osun LG chairmen can’t return to office —PDP
•Our 30 chairmen will resume whether anybody wants it or not —APC

No fewer than six persons reportedly lost their lives on Monday as the dispute over the status of former local government chairmen of Osun State turned bloody.

At least, two persons were feared killed in Iragbiji of Boripe Local Government Areas of Osun State, while several others wounded in other LGs in the state following the resumption of officials elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the October 15, 2022 LG elections in the state at the council secretariats.

Also, in Ikire of Irewole LGA, the APC council chairman, Remi Abass was shot dead by suspected political thugs.

In Ilesa, a former Commissioner for Works under Governor Gboyega Oyetola, Engineer Remi Omowaye narrowly escaped being killed as his vehicle was riddled with bullets while his office was set ablaze.

At Isokan local government, an APC councillor was killed and another party members also lost his life in Olaoluwa.

The deceased said to be the only casualty in the local government secretariat following the invasion by APC members to take possession of the council.

Investigations revealed that before his death, the councellor led some of his members to the secretariat, who shot sporadically into the air to scare people away from the area.

However, another set of thugs reportedly engaged them in the secretariat, killing the councillor in the process.

Seeing that their leader was in the pool of his blood, his followers were said to have retreated, while their attackers gave them a hot chase.

Meanwhile, in Ikire, APC members reportedly launched an attack on a cross section of PDP members, leading to the death of one.

Also, scores were injured during the free-for-all between the APC and PDP supporters while some managed to escape.

Several people were further injured across local government areas as the crisis rocking the state over controversy surrounding the Appeal Court judgment on the sacked local government chairmen snowballed into violence.

Anxiety and apprehension enveloped the length and breadth of the state following the invasion of some local government councils by yet-to-be-identified hoodlums attempting to take over the control of the councils.

Our reporter gathered that the hoodlums, who were armed with cutlasses, guns, machetes, axes, broken bottles and other dangerous items, displayed the weapons to register their presence in the invaded council areas and to get people scared.

Some of the councils, where the presence of the thugs was felt include: Ayedaade, Boripe, Osogbo, Olorunda, Ila, Isokan, Irewole, Obokun, and Atakumosa.

In Osogbo, heavy gunshots rent the air when PDP supporters and APC supporters clashed, while in Irewole local government in Ikire, there was a heavy clash between the PDP and APC supporters.

Speaking with newsmen on those that lost their lives in Iragbiji, the state commissioner for Protocol and government House, Honourable Soji Ajeigbe, gave the names of the casualties as Damilare Oloyede, and one other person simply identified as Taye, said to be thugs working for the APC.

He gave the names of the injured persons receiving treatment in the hospital to include: Taofek Opaleye, Tunde Oladejo, Yinka Opaleye, Yinka Babatunde, Ogunwole Abiodun, Babalola Muda and Opaniyi Adeniyi.

At the Olorunda local government secretariat, in Igbona, Osogbo, APC members that wanted to take over the council were resisted by the PDP members.

At the entrance of the secretariat, some hoodlums were seen dressed in traditional attires with charms, while efforts to record the scene with mobile phones were blocked.

Addressing PDP members near the secretariat, Osun State Commissioner for Rural Development, Mr. Gani Olaoluwa said: “We won’t allow any illegal takeover here. No court judgment restored them here”.

At Ifedayo local government area of the state, APC members who allegedly tried to take over the council but PDP supporters fired shots indiscriminately before the APC members were overpowered and given a hot chase out of the council.

At Ede North and Ede South, the APC supporters were resisted.

While confirming the killings in Isokan, Irewole and Olaoluwa Local Government Area, the immediate senior adviser to Oyetola on Education matter, Mr. Jamiu Olawumi described the incidents as barbaric.

He, however, said the APC has taken over 15 local councils out of 30 in the state.

Meanwhile, the commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Adebayo Adeleke, debunked the accusation that he had a hand in the killing in Iragbiji.

He vowed: “By tomorrow, 30 of our chairmen will resume, whether anybody wants it or not. If you want to kill us, kill us. If you want to swallow our blood, swallow it.”

When contacted, Osun State Police Command spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola said, investigations are on going on the matter.

Gov Adeleke to Osun residents: Stay away from LG secretariats

Condoles with victims of illegal takeover bid
Governor Ademola Adeleke has directed Osun residents, including politicians across political divides to stay away from the local government secretariats to protect public properties and avoid further bloodshed.

In a reaction to the APC takeover bid of local governments in Osun, the governor affirmed that since the local government workers are on strike, only security agencies should be allowed to man the secretariats.

“I, therefore, direct all law abiding Osun residents to stay away from the council secretariats especially as they are expected to be under lock and key.

“I equally condole families of victims of the APC illegal takeover bid and chaos unleashed across the state by the APC and their hired thugs. PDP lost five members with several others wounded.

“Two of those members are from Iragbiji, Boripe local government. Another two were killed at Ola Oluwa Local government. Another life was lost at Ikire. We must stop the bloodshed”, the governor lamented.

He assured residents of their safety and protection of lives and properties, affirming that he has directed security agencies to take charge of all local government secretariats.

Shakira wrote on Instagram Monday that the gates to the National Stadium in Lima will open at 4:00 pm (2100 GMT) for a concert due to kick off at 8:15 pm.

The post made no reference to her health.

Events company Masterlive confirmed Monday’s scheduled show will go ahead, and said it would announce a new date soon for the concert that had to be scrapped Sunday.

Shakira is on her first world tour in seven years.

Named “Las mujeres ya no lloran” (Women Don’t Cry Anymore), it kicked off in Rio de Janeiro just a few days after she received a Grammy for best Latin pop album.

The singer dedicated the award to migrants in the United States facing deportation under President Donald Trump.

With more than 90 million records sold worldwide and four Grammy Awards under her belt, among many other prizes, Shakira is one of the most popular Latin artists of all time.

She is set to perform nearly 50 dates in Latin America by the end of June, followed by more concerts in the United States and Canada.

Plans to marry Chika Ike, pregnancy rumours false – Ned Nwoko

The senator representing the Delta North senatorial district, Ned Nwoko has debunked claims that he plans to marry Nollywood actor, Chika Ike and the father of her unborn child.

However, in a rebuttal statement from the Director of Communications, Office of Senator Prince Ned Munir Nwoko, he said “Our attention has been drawn to the recent false rumours alleging that Senator Prince Ned Munir Nwoko is planning to marry Nollywood actress Chika Ike as his seventh wife and that she is pregnant for him.

”We categorically state that these claims are entirely baseless and a product of malicious speculation. ”

The senator accused bloggers of fabricating statements regarding his support for Tuface to marry Edo lawmaker Natasha Osawuru.

“Similarly, reports claiming he made statements about Tuface and polygamy are completely untrue. As a public figure and with his wife also being an actress, it is not unusual for bloggers seeking attention to fabricate such stories.

Amid the controversy, Chika Ike has yet to comment on the matter.

“However, Senator Nwoko is currently on a national assignment, focused on delivering on his political mandate, and has no time for distractions.

“This office remains available to journalists for verification of information, and we remind media practitioners of the consequences of spreading fake news. The public is advised to disregard these rumours and relies only on official statements from his office.”

Claims that our fuel doesn’t last misleading – NNPCL

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), on Saturday, debunked claims in a viral video that its premium motor spirit (PMS) does not last as long as the one from Dangote Refinery.

In a statement signed by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, the NNPCL said the claim is misleading, false, baseless and entirely unfounded.

The viral video showed a content creator who claimed that he bought a litre of Dangote petrol from MRS filling station in Alapere, Lagos, at N925 and the same litre at NNPCL in Ojodu Berger at the rate of N945.

He said that after pouring the fuel into different generators, the one running on NNPCL fuel stopped after 17 minutes, while the Dangote petrol lasted until 33 minutes.

But the NNPCL said the claim originates from unverified and amateur research, which lacks credibility, accuracy, and professional oversight.

It emphasized that a significant percentage of fuel sold at its filling station the content creator claimed to have bought fuel was sourced from the Dangote Refinery.

The statement reads, “The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd strongly refutes the false and misleading allegations made in a viral video circulating online, which claims that NNPC fuel does not last. This assertion is baseless and entirely unfounded, originating from unverified and amateur research that lacks credibility, accuracy, and professional oversight.

“NNPC Ltd reaffirms that its fuel is carefully formulated with one of the best compositions, ensuring optimal efficiency, durability, and environmental sustainability for consumers. Furthermore, it is important to emphasize that a significant percentage of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) sold at NNPC retail stations in Lagos—where this deceptive video was created—is sourced from the Dangote Refinery, a strategic partner in promoting local production and energy security.

“Dangote Refinery adheres to strict industry standards, guaranteeing the quality of petroleum products supplied to our consumers. This misleading video represents yet another desperate attempt by economic saboteurs to misinform the public and tarnish NNPC Ltd’s reputation.

“We will not tolerate deliberate misinformation designed to undermine our operations and mislead Nigerians. Henceforth, NNPC Ltd will take firm legal action against individuals or groups who intentionally spread falsehoods about our brand and operations. Those engaged in such malicious activities will be held fully accountable under the law.

“We urge the public to disregard such fabricated content and rely on verified sources for accurate information. NNPC Ltd remains steadfast in its mission to ensure fuel availability, affordability, and quality for all Nigerians while maintaining global industry standards.”

However, police authorities in Kwara State said the suspected killer has been arrested.

Yetunde went missing on Monday, February 10, 2025. She was at a naming ceremony when she received a call from a friend. According to sources, she dropped her food to answer the call and then left.

“Since then, we’ve been searching for her everywhere. But no one knew her whereabouts. On Tuesday, her parents reported the case to the Oja Oba Police Station in Ilorin. The police requested her phone number and used it to track her last call. The call was traced to an individual living in the Offa Garage District area of Ilorin, although his family house is in Isalekuto.

“The suspect was arrested but initially denied knowledge of the lady’s whereabouts. However, when the police searched his house, he confessed that the lady was in his area and had died from an asthma attack after he called her to come over.

“Upon further investigation, the police found the lady’s body, dismembered and hidden in a bowl, along with the equipment used to dismember her. The suspect is now at the police headquarters in Ilorin.

“I commend the Kwara State Police Command, Ojo Oba, for the excellent job they’ve done in solving this case. The deceased lady was a final-year student of the Kwara State College of Education in Ilorin. They met on Facebook, where he obtained her phone number. He then called her, inviting her to come over.

“Disturbingly, evidence found in the suspect’s house suggests this may not be his first offence. A table in his room appeared to be equipped with tools used to dismember bodies,”

Meanwhile, the Kwara State Police Command, through its spokesman Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi said investigations are ongoing over the matter.

The spokesperson said immediately after the issue was reported, “the police detectives swung into action, tracked her number and arrested a suspect, and exhibits recovered. The case was transferred yesterday to the SCID for discreet investigations”.

Ambassador Tuggar later briefed President Tinubu about the summit and some diplomatic wins for the country, a session that stretched until about 2a.m. on Friday.

Among the wins was the re-election of Ambassador Bankole Adeoye as African Union commissioner for political affairs, peace and security. Nigeria also retains its seat on the African Union peace and security council, reaffirming, in the words of Ambassador Tuggar, “Nigeria’s leadership and commitment to peace and security on the continent”.

At the briefing were Wale Edun, the minister of finance; Abubakar Badaru, minister of defence; Jumoke Oduwole, the minister of trade and investment; Festus Keyamo, minister of aviation; Muhammed Idris, minister of information and national orientation; Balarabe Abbas Lawal, minister of environment and Doris Uzoka-Anite, minister of state for finance.

President Tinubu will deliver a speech at the summit-level meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council, where discussions will focus on current security challenges on the continent, including the escalation of conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

President Tinubu is scheduled to return to Abuja on Monday, February 17.

FG to set up ‘power rangers’ to stop vandalism of electricity assets — Minister

Nigeria has decided to set up a special security team to protect its power installations and infrastructure

The ‘power rangers’ will be created with officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and will be responsible for stopping the vandalism of power infrastructure which has caused blackouts across the country.

Amid growing reports of vandals damaging power installations and outcry over frequent blackouts sometimes caused by vandalism, the minister said it was critical to find a unique solution to the problem.

The decision to set up the power rangers, he said, was influenced by the successes of the Mines Marshalls unveiled by the Federal Government in March 2024 to tackle security challenges in the mining sector.

“What we had before we (the Bola Tinubu administration) came was the generalisation of national assets. But we said no, you cannot have one specific medication that can treat all illnesses,” he said.

“So you have to analyse every sector, the power sector, the water sector, the education sector, the health sector… and be able to create arms of Civil Defence under the same umbrella.”

Although the decision has been made to set up the ‘power rangers’, the minister didn’t provide a date for the unit to be unveiled or inaugurated.

Instead, he explained some of the steps being taken to create the unit.

“We’ve already agreed on the modus operandi and as I speak to you, the offices are being screened,” he said.

“Don’t forget that we are going to have officers in all 36 states plus the FCT because there is no state without a power infrastructure; it is just like the solid mineral sector.
