According to the organisers, this edition will take place on April 5, 2025

They also said that the awards will be held in Lagos, Nigeria after criticisms from several quarters over it being held in the United States.

Hip Hop artiste Tochukwu Ojogwu, aka Odumodu Blvck, dominated the nominations on the list with a total of five.

A surprise entry was the late Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, who bagged three nominations.

Dangote refinery drops diesel price from ₦1,075 to ₦1,020 per litre

0

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has dropped the cost of its diesel product to ₦1,020 per litre, down from ₦1,075 per litre at the gantry price.

In a statement, the $20bn company said the reduction was part of its effort to better serve its customers and Nigerians in general.

“Since it began diesel production in January 2024, the refinery has reduced the price of diesel more than three times, from an initial N1,700 per litre to the current rate, thus providing much-needed relief to manufacturers and consumers alike,” the company stated.

Recently, the private refinery slashed its ex-depot price for petrol from ₦950 per litre to ₦890 “based on market realities”.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, faces energy challenges, with all its state-owned refineries non-operational for decades until 2024. The country was heavily reliant on imported refined petroleum products, with the state-run NNPC being the major importer of the essential commodities.

Fuel queues are commonplace in the country. Prices of petrol more than quadrupled since the removal of subsidy in May 2023 by President Bola Tinubu, from around ₦200/litre to over ₦1000/litre, compounding the woes of the citizens who power their vehicles, and generating sets with petrol, no thanks to decades-long epileptic electricity supply.

Last December, Aliko Dangote, Africa’s leading industrialist, commenced operations at the facility situated in Lagos with 350,000 barrels a day. The refinery, which was initially bogged by regulatory battles, hopes to achieve its full capacity of 650,000 barrels per day by the end of the year. The refinery has begun the supply of diesel and aviation fuel to marketers in the country and now petrol.

UCL: Man City still worst opponent for Real Madrid, says Ancelotti

0

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti believes the winner of his side’s Champions League play-off clash with Manchester City will be among the favourites to lift the trophy.

Real and City are set to clash for the fourth consecutive season in Europe’s elite club competition, with the first leg in Manchester on Tuesday.

But the latest blockbuster showdown between teams more accustomed to meeting in the latter stages is earlier than usual this term after both lost three of their eight games in the new-look league phase.

City sneaked into the knockout stages thanks to a second-half fightback against Club Brugge in their final match and have suffered a staggering fall from grace in the Premier League.

After an unprecedented run of four consecutive titles, Pep Guardiola’s men sit fourth in the table, 15 points adrift of leaders Liverpool.

Madrid are in pole position in a three-way title race in La Liga, ahead of Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, but have also struggled at times this season, hampered by a series of injuries to their defence.

However, the victor in the tie between Real and City has gone on to win the Champions League in each of the past three seasons and Ancelotti expects the streak could continue.

“Yes, the most difficult opponent, most important opponent and against the best manager,” Ancelotti said at a pre-match press conference on Monday.

“I’m convinced the team that goes through in this tie will go very deep into the competition.”

City won just once in 13 games in a torrid spell between the end of October and December.

Guardiola’s men have picked up slightly in 2025, but their frailties were still exposed in a 5-1 thrashing by Arsenal in their last Premier League match.

Ancelotti expressed his surprise at that run but believes City still have the players and coach to do damage to the Champions League holders.

“I continue to think City is one of the best teams in Europe and that they have the best coach in this competition. It is still the most difficult game we could have,” he said.

“I am surprised they had a period where it was difficult to overcome the injuries but now the team I saw in the last few games is a good team, a competitive team.

“I struggle to imagine Manchester City not being strong. They are really strong with fantastic players and a fantastic manager.”

Ancelotti will have to field a makeshift defence after Lucas Vazquez became his latest injury casualty.

Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba are also absent from the Madrid squad.

Midfielders Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde are expected to start in the back four alongside Raul Asencio and Ferland Mendy.

Our support for Tinubu wasn’t to get anything in return – El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on Monday, said his support for President Bola Tinubu’s election in 2023 was never to gain any favour in return.

El-Rufai was an integral member of the Northern governors in the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) who prior to the party’s primary, insisted that a Southerner must succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.

Tinubu later emerged as the party’s candidate and eventually won the election against Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP).

El-Rufai, who seems to have fallen out with the Tinubu’s camp, has been critical of the Tinubu administration and the APC recently. This has resulted in constant exchange of words between the former Kaduna governor and some aides of the President on X.

“When they were desperately seeking El-Rufai’s support, #officialABAT and his goons were everywhere singing Malam’s praises. Given their penchant for ingratitude, however, they’ve turned around to claim that Malam didn’t even support PBAT. But these testimonies say otherwise,” Tukur’s post read.

Replying to the tweet via his X handle, El-Rufai said that he had no personal expectations from his political actions, adding that the developing events were simply a reflection of human nature.

“We did what we did for God, country, and party, expecting nothing in return. What is unfolding is merely another life experience and part of human nature. We have moved on, but their conscience won’t let them sleep well. Thanks anyway,” he wrote.

Atiku, Tambuwal, Imoke in closed-door meeting with Obasanjo

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Monday led a delegation to meet with his former boss, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo at the hilltop residence of the former Nigerian leader in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

The former vice president was accompanied by former Governor of Cross River State, Liyel Imoke; Senator Abdul Ningi; and Senator Aminu Tambuwal who is a former governor of Sokoto State.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Monday arrived with a delegation to meet with his former boss, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo at the hilltop residence of the former Nigerian leader in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

The agenda of the meeting was not known as of press time but it comes amid plans by opposition politicians to map out strategies to trounce the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and win the 2027 presidential election.

Atiku deputised Obasanjo from May 1999 to May 2007. Atiku, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023, came second after President Bola Tinubu of the APC who won the poll.

Atiku, 78, has been in the race to become Nigeria’s president for at least three decades.

FG should allow NUC manage budgets of universities – JAMB registrar

0

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof Is-haq Oloyede, says the autonomy of public universities can be better achieved if the National Universities Commission (NUC) is left alone to manage the budgets of tertiary institutions in addition to its role as the regulator that accredits courses in schools.

Oloyede, who is also a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, was a guest on the Sunday edition of Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, a socio-political programme aired on Channels Television.

The JAMB Registrar said university education is so sensitive and the government should allow experts to administer these tertiary institutions.

He faulted a situation where each public university now approaches the National Assembly to defend their budget and get whatever they want based on the people they know and the influence they wield.

He said, “We can still re-engineer the situation to have the things we need. We need to look at the funding mechanism. The National Universities Commission (NUC), for example, should be left alone to run the universities. Hold the National Universities Commission responsible for the management of the universities.

He said, “We can still re-engineer the situation to have the things we need. We need to look at the funding mechanism. The National Universities Commission (NUC), for example, should be left alone to run the universities. Hold the National Universities Commission responsible for the management of the universities.

“I was chairman, Committee of Vice Chancellors and I was involved in re-organising and retooling of the National Universities Commission. When the NUC was in charge, things were done well. I believe very strongly that the autonomy that we are talking about for our universities can be better achieved if we allow the NUC to coordinate the affair.

“Now, every university goes to the National Assembly for their budget, for their defence and the more you can pull the weight, the more will determine.”

He said when the NUC managed the budget of universities, there was the Universities Annual Review System which looked at how many candidates universities have across disciplines and used that to determine the next year’s budget.

“Whether you know anybody or you don’t does not come in. The NUC will determine the parameter number of students and so on. And it is the NUC that will defend at the National Assembly and the Ministry of Education,” he said.

Oloyede said when the NUC was in charge, the money going into capital development was high but now, it has fallen because universities now have too many support staff.

He envisaged a situation where public universities would get funds based on the number of students they admit.

“I believe that the way we are running and the way we are funding, it could get to a level that we will say: University of Abuja, you are producing XY medical doctors, what does it take to train one medical doctor? This is the quota we have given you. So, we now calculate (the amount). Both your capital and your recurrent expenditure won’t be our business. And we would have built research into it to ascertain the amount,” he said.

The former vice chancellor also said Nigeria does not need more universities, stressing that the current ones should be expanded and equipped for better performance. He lamented a trend where politicians now compensate marginalised communities with the creation of universities instead of the establishment of factories and industries.

Snake, monkey mustn’t swallow $1.07bn health funds, Atiku warns FG

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has warned the Federal Government that “claims of animals such as snakes, termites, gorillas and monkeys swallowing public funds must never be the fate of the funds budgeted for the critical sector of health in the 2025 budget.”

In a statement on Sunday, Atiku urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to provide transparency on how the intervention fund would be allocated.

The former Vice President emphasised the importance of accountability, stressing that every kobo must be properly utilised to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system.

He said, “In recent years, there have been bizarre claims of animals being held accountable for missing public funds. Some of these fairytale-like claims were never investigated or punished to deter future offenders.

“Against the backdrop of dwindling resources that has been exacerbated by the withdrawal of support in certain areas of our healthcare services, it is important that every kobo budgeted for the health sector has to be maximally utilised.

To this end, the Federal Government has to be deliberate about putting mechanisms in place for public audit and accountability in its $1.07bn budgetary appropriation in the health sector.”

Atiku criticised the Federal Government for failing to provide a clear framework detailing how over $1bn would be spent in the primary health sector.

He noted that while healthcare investment was essential for improving access to quality services, the government has a moral duty to disclose how these funds will be utilised.

“We have read that the Federal Government plans to expend a whopping $1.07bn in the primary health sector. This amount is in addition to the N2.48tn earlier proposed for the health sector in the initial budget draft.

“Nigerians deserve to know the details of these loans and how the funds will be spent. The budget should be accompanied by a clear policy framework explaining its disbursement,” he added.

“Banditry attacks on our highways, villages, and cities are under control. We are gradually winning the war against criminals, and life is returning to our communities. This is evident in the number of incidents reported daily and the increasing project implementation across the length and breadth of Zamfara State,” the governor said, according to a statement by his spokesperson, Sulaiman Idris.

The statement added that the visit was expected to strengthen cooperation and partnership between the Zamfara state government and the World Bank.

In his remarks, Lawal emphasised his administration’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the World Bank.

“I want to begin by thanking the World Bank for its ongoing support for our state. We have aligned our development objectives with the World Bank’s mission to alleviate poverty and promote sustainable development.

“We also recognize the security challenges that have previously impacted project implementation in Zamfara State, particularly those that have hindered the full achievement of targets due to constraints on operational activities. We are, however, making progress as the challenge is being addressed, and things are returning to normal.

“We have enhanced security measures through proactive steps taken by the state to improve security through increased patrols and strategic measures that mitigate threats.

“Our administration is dedicated to ensuring the safety of lives and property by providing adequate logistics and support to security agencies to maintain peace and stability.”

The World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Dr. Ndiamé Diop, commended Governor Lawal for positively advancing Zamfara State.

“I am impressed by the system you put in place. Congratulations on achieving such feats in such a very short time.”

Ogun government warns Portable against assault of its officials

The Ogun State Government has warned Hip-hop artiste, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable against what it described as his habit of assaulting government officials without provocation.

Portable has never shied away from controversies since his break-out song ”Zazuu Zeh” from picking fights with any of his baby mamas or a show promoter to his arrest by the Police.

A statement issued and signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade on Friday condemned Wednesday’s assault on officials of the state Planning and Development Permit Authority by miscreants allegedly under the musician’s hire.

The incident was said to have occurred in the Iyana- Ilogbo area of the State

“We are profoundly taken aback by the unpleasant and uncivil act of the Hip-hop artiste, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable on Wednesday, in Iyana- Ilogbo area of the State where is bar is located” the statement read

“The way in which Portable and some set of miscreants he employed in the dastardly act attacked the officials of the state planning and development permit Authority is not only bizarre but a confirmation of erosion of Omoluabi ethos in those individuals and indeed a great disgrace to the state”

Akinmade said the latest attack orchestrated by Portable and his cohorts against government officials who were on their lawful assignment in the area was unacceptable and barbaric, saying such an indecent act would be addressed in line with the extant law of the land.

He, therefore, reiterated the stance of Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration to sanitize the state against every unlawful act and entrench decency in all strata, saying the government is serious about the distinct values of Omoluabi ethos at all times.
