One House, two speakers: Lagos Assembly sinks deeper into crisis

The crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly has escalated, with both Mudashiru Obasa and Mojisola Meranda claiming the Speakership. Compounding the turmoil, the Assembly now has two clerks – Ottun Babatunde and the suspended Olalekan Onafeko – each asserting authority, writes GBENGA OLONINIRAN

The leadership crisis rocking the Lagos State House of Assembly has polarised the state legislative arm. At the moment, both Mudashiru Obasa and Mojisola Meranda are laying claims to the position of Speaker of the House.

The imbroglio revolves around the removal of Obasa on January 13, 2025, as Speaker of the House. Thirty-three lawmakers at the sitting on the fateful day removed Obasa and declared a former Deputy Speaker, Meranda, as Speaker.

Though the lawmakers cited abuse of office, financial misappropriations and misconduct as part of the reasons for Obasa’s removal, the decision marked the genesis of the crisis at the 10th Assembly.

Obasa was removed by the lawmakers while he was away in the United States of America. Upon his return to Lagos on January 25, 2025, he faulted his removal.

Despite the intervention of key chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, notably former governors of Osun and Ogun states, Chief Bisi Akande and Chief Olusegun Osoba, respectively, the leadership crisis was not resolved.

The Governance Advisory Council in the state has also been unable to resolve the crisis, with some members believing that only President Bola Tinubu can intervene effectively.

But despite the intervention of the Akande-led mediating panel drafted by Tinubu to resolve the issues, the crisis seems to have worsened. The panel had met with GAC members, party stakeholders in the state and the lawmakers, all to no avail.

Last Thursday, Obasa, who had been absent from the House since his removal, returned to the assembly complex in a shocking move.

The embattled former speaker arrived at the assembly complex accompanied by security officials and made his way into the Speaker’s Office around 9 am.

The move left many political stakeholders and the public in shock as the new turn of events threw the House into more confusion.

Earlier in the day, more security escorts were attached to Obasa by the police, the same morning when police officers attached to Meranda were withdrawn by the Lagos State Police Command.

Some speculators were of the view that the security escorts attached to Obasa on that day aided his entry into the House at a time when Meranda’s security escorts and the police officers attached to the assembly had been withdrawn.

“We don’t know why the authorities have done that, but all the police officers and other security details attached to her have been withdrawn. She’s on her own at the moment,” her aide, Victor Ganzallo, told Rushonline, lamenting that his principal was vulnerable.

But the police command, later in the evening, held a press conference to clarify the matter.

The newly redeployed Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Moshood Jimoh, cited personnel audit as the reason for the withdrawal of the security operatives.

“As I speak with you, the audit of the police personnel attached to Hon Mojisola Meranda has been completed, and the form-armed police personnel attached to her from the Nigeria State Police Command have been returned to her for her protection,” the commissioner said on Thursday evening.

“It is pertinent to state that the ongoing police personnel audit has been on for several days now, and prominent personalities and individuals have been complying with the process. The exercise, once again, is not aimed or targeted at any individuals,” the police commissioner added.

The police command stated that Obasa had also applied to request security protection due to alleged threats to his life.

In a statement signed by the command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, he stated that there was “an application from Hon Mudashiru Obasa on threats to his life and that of his family in the last few days, and it was on that basis that police personnel were assigned to him for protection only.”

The command maintained that it was “not aware of, nor involved in, how or when the office of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly was broken into.”

NLC threatens fresh protest against power tariff hike

The Nigeria Labour Congress has vowed to mobilise workers and citizens for a nationwide protest if the Federal Government proceeds with its proposed electricity tariff hike, describing it as “economic violence against the working class and broader Nigerian populace.”

This came as the National Union of Electricity Employees warned the Federal Government against plans to hike electricity tariffs, saying Nigerians should not be paying for darkness.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its National Executive Council meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, on February 28, 2025, which was made available to journalists on Sunday, the NLC rejected what it called a “sham reclassification” of electricity consumers by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.”

It accused the Ministry of Power and NERC of attempting to force consumers into higher tariff bands under the pretext of service improvement while, in reality, deepening economic hardship.

“The ruling elite, acting as enforcers of global monopoly capital, are determined to further deepen the misery of the Nigerian people through incessant tariff hikes, increased taxation, and relentless economic strangulation,” the statement read.

The NEC resolved that “any attempt to impose additional electricity tariffs would be met with mass resistance.” It mandated its “National Administrative Council to begin immediate mobilisation for protests,” warning that the government must not test the patience of the Nigerian people.

Beyond electricity, the NLC also expressed concerns over the recent 35 per cent increase in telecommunications tariffs.

While the congress acknowledged an agreement with the Federal Government to reduce the initial proposed hike from 50 per cent to 35 per cent, it remained skeptical of the government’s commitment to keeping its word.

The union further warned that if the new telecom tariffs, set to take effect on March 1, 2025, are implemented contrary to the agreed terms, it would enforce compliance using all necessary instruments.

The congress emphasised that Nigerian workers should not bear the brunt of corporate and government inefficiencies.

The NLC’s stance on electricity tariffs has been reinforced by workers in the power sector, who have also rejected the reclassification of consumers.

Zelensky and Trump’s meeting at the Oval Office on Friday, with US Vice President JD Vance also in attendance ended in a deadlock.

Discussions at the meeting generated heated arguments as the two leaders debated the future of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Tensions escalated when the leaders clashed over a minerals deal that would grant the US extensive access to Ukraine’s rare earth resources in exchange for Washington’s continued support for Kyiv in its fight against Russia.

Zelensky insisted that any agreement must include genuine security guarantees for Ukraine, a demand that Trump resisted.

The press conference turned confrontational when Vance accused Zelensky of being “disrespectful,” pointedly asking, “Have you said ‘thank you’ once?”

The press conference turned confrontational when Vance accused Zelensky of being “disrespectful,” pointedly asking, “Have you said ‘thank you’ once?”

The meeting concluded abruptly, with Zelensky and his delegation being escorted out of the White House.

Shortly after the meeting, Zelensky took to X to express gratitude to Trump, the US Congress, and Americans for their support.

“Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that,” he wrote.

In an interview with Fox News, Zelensky was asked if he would apologise to Trump. While he declined to elaborate, he acknowledged the public fallout, saying it was “not good for both sides.”

“I’m not sure that we did something bad,” he added. “I cannot change the Ukrainian attitude towards Russia. They are killers for us.”

However, when asked if his relationship with Trump could still be salvaged, Zelensky responded affirmatively.

On Saturday, he posted again on social media, saying, “It is very important for us that Ukraine is heard and that no one forgets about it, neither during the war nor after. It is important for people in Ukraine to know that they are not alone, that their interests are represented in every country, in every corner of the world.”

Following the event, leaders from various parts of the world took to social media, issuing statements on their X handles in support of Ukraine and criticising Russia’s continued aggression.

Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, condemned Russia for its “illegal and unjustifiable invasion” of Ukraine.

“For three years now, Ukrainians have fought with courage and resilience. Their fight for democracy, freedom, and sovereignty is a fight that matters to us all. Canada will continue to stand with Ukraine and Ukrainians in achieving a just and lasting peace,” Trudeau wrote.

Also, French President Emmanuel Macron criticised Russia’s actions and defended the sanctions imposed three years ago.

“Thanks to all those who helped and continue. And respect to those who, since the beginning, have been fighting. Because they are fighting for their dignity, their independence, for their children, and for the security of Europe,” Macron stated.

Similarly, Slovenian President Nataša Musar denounced Russia’s aggression and commented on the Oval Office meeting.

“What we witnessed in the Oval Office undermines these values and the foundations of diplomacy. We stand firmly in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty. We repeat, Russia is the aggressor,” Musar wrote.

Austrian Chancellor, Karl Nehammer, reiterated Europe’s backing for Ukraine.

“Russia is the aggressor, and therefore Europe supports Ukraine‘s efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace,” he stated.

Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs also expressed solidarity with Ukraine.

“Ukraine is a victim of Russian aggression. It fights the war with help from many friends and partners,” he posted.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb highlighted Ukraine’s struggle for survival.

He wrote, “The heroic fight of Ukraine against Russia’s war of aggression is about the existence of Ukraine as a nation. We in Finland understand what Ukraine is going through. Ukraine is fighting not only for her independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.”

Similarly, Montenegrin President, Jakov Milatovic and Slovak Republic’s fifth President Zuzana Čaputová also expressed support for Ukraine, with Čaputová stating, “The people of Ukraine are defending their right to live. It’s that simple. They deserve all the support they can get to defend this right and to live and prosper as a sovereign nation living in peace.”

Several other world leaders echoed similar sentiments in their tweets, reaffirming their backing for Ukraine.

Ramadan: Reps member warns traders against price hikes

0

As the Ramadan Fast begins, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Interior Abdullahi Aliyu has urged grocery traders to refrain from exploiting people by charging exorbitant prices for food items during the Holy month.

Aliyu, who made the appeal in his Ramadan message to Nigerian Muslims at home and in the diaspora, said the exploitation was against the tenets of Islam and the spirit of Ramadan.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Sardauna Francis, the lawmaker cautioned the traders to desist from increasing prices of goods and food items during the holy month.

According to him, the once-so-soaring prices of essential food items are trending downward, hence appealing to grocery sellers not to hike the prices to provide relief to the nation’s fasting population.

Aliyu, who represents Musawa/Matazu Federal Constituency, in Katsina South, said the traders and other Muslims should rather project the best and finest virtues of Islam by showing kindness and love for humanity in all their dealings.

“While we are observing this important occasion in the spiritual life of Muslims, I urged traders who increase the prices of their goods and food items at the beginning of every month of Ramadan to refrain from such exploitation,” he added.

He, however, admonished the Muslim faithful to devote themselves fully to the five pillars of Islam and use Ramadan to pray for the progress, peace, and prosperity of the nation.

Describing Ramadan as an occasion for deep reflection, greater fear of “Allah, and avoidance of all evils that harm humanity,” the lawmaker further urged the faithful to embody the virtues of selflessness and holiness.

Supreme court bars CBN from releasing Rivers allocations, asks Amaewhule-led lawmakers to resume sitting

The Supreme Court has barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation and other agencies from releasing funds to the government of Rivers State until it purges itself of what the court describes as flagrant disobedience to court orders.

In a one hour, thirty-six-minute judgement delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye, the five-man panel of the court unanimously dismissed the cross-appeal filed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara challenging the validity of the House of Assembly presided over by Martin Amaewhule as the Speaker.

In dismissing Governor Fubara’s appeal, the court ordered Martin Amaewhule to resume sitting immediately with other elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The court held that it is an aberration for Governor Fubara to have purportedly presented an appropriation bill before a four-man House of Assembly thereby denying twenty-eight constituencies of effective representation in vagrant violation of a court order mandating him (Fubara) to re-present the 2024 appropriation bill before a validly constituted Assembly led by Amaewhule.

The apex court further held that the actions of Governor Fubara over the alleged defection of twenty-eight members of the Rivers Assembly is an act of brigandage and dictatorship aimed at preventing the House from performing its legitimate functions under the speakership of Amaewhule.

The court also held that the demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex by Governor Fubara is an act of indiscipline bordering on the excessive use of executive might to frustrate the sitting of the Assembly led by Amaewhule.

FCCPC directs MultiChoice to suspend fee hike

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has directed MultiChoice Nigeria, the operator of DStv and GOtv, to maintain its current subscription prices pending the conclusion of an ongoing investigation into the company’s proposed tariff adjustment.

FCCPC disclosed this in a statement on Thursday by its Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu.

The directive follows MultiChoice’s request for an extension regarding its scheduled appearance before the commission over concerns surrounding its recurring price increases.

Although FCCPC granted the company’s request to postpone the session, it has now rescheduled the hearing for March 6, 2025, mandating the company’s CEO, relevant officers, and a comprehensive response to the inquiry.

“As part of this directive, MultiChoice is expressly instructed to maintain the existing price structure as of February 27, 2025, pending the commission’s review and final determination on the matter,” the statement read.

The agency also emphasised that the decision to freeze prices is aimed at preventing potential consumer exploitation during the investigation period.

Earlier, the regulator summoned MultiChoice’s Chief Executive Officer to appear before it on February 27 for an investigative hearing.

MultiChoice had notified its customers on Monday of the impending price adjustment, citing a review of its pricing structure.

While the company stated that the changes were necessary to continue delivering world-class content, the development sparked concerns from subscribers.

Under the proposed adjustment, the DStv Compact package would be increased, while the Compact Plus and Premium bouquets would remain at N30,000 and N44,500, respectively.

In its notice titled “Price Adjustments for DStv and GOtv Packages,” the company said, “Dear Customer, please note that effective March 1, 2025, there will be a price adjustment on all DStv packages.

Amorim: I will talk to Garnacho after substitution reaction

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim will “talk” with Alejandro Garnacho following his reaction to being substituted against Ipswich.

Garnacho was rewarded with a start following his impressive performance off the bench against Everton, which helped spark the 2-2 comeback, but was sacrificed after Patrick Dorgu was sent off.

Amorim opted to bring defender Noussair Mazraoui on for Garnacho, with the forward heading straight to the changing rooms after the decision was made.

When asked about the reaction from Garnacho, Amorim said he would deal with the situation privately and talk to the player.

“I am going to talk with Garnacho about that,” he said. “I will talk about that in the next press conference.

“You’re making a connection with [Marcus] Rashford. I know.”

The comment arrives after Rashford, who left in the January transfer window to join Aston Villa on loan, failed to acknowledge Amorim when he was substituted in his final appearance before leaving the club against Viktoria Plzen on December 12.

When pushed for an answer on why Garnacho reacted in that way, Amorim added: “It was cold and wet, maybe? The thinking was we would play in a 5-3-1. It is a risk, you take the only player off with pace.

“I felt the team was okay and controlling the game. We made the substitution and had to choose someone. It was my choice.”

Garnacho has since taken to his personal Instagram account after the full-time to post a picture of him being substituted without a caption.

Haaland back with a bang as Man City beat Spurs

0

Erling Haaland returned from injury to clinch Manchester City’s 1-0 win at Tottenham as the troubled champions moved into fourth place in the Premier League on Wednesday.

Haaland had missed City’s Champions League play-off second leg exit against Real Madrid and the Premier League defeat to Liverpool with a knee injury suffered against Newcastle on February 15.

Read Also‘Soft’ Man Utd have to survive this season, says Amorim

The Norway star marked his return with the first half winner in north London as City climbed one point above Chelsea, who had gone fourth after their win over Southampton on Tuesday.

It was Haaland’s 28th goal in all competitions this season, with 10 of those coming in his last 11 games to silence the critics after a barren spell earlier this season.

After four defeats in their last six games in all competitions, this was a much-needed victory for City, who started strongly but rode their luck as Tottenham missed a series of second half chances.

Pep Guardiola’s side are still a million miles away from the team that powered to four successive league titles prior to this season.

But Guardiola will take encouragement from the way they ground out a gritty success at a time when so little is going right for them.

Tottenham’s run of two consecutive wins came to an end, maintaining the inconsistency that has hampered them for a much of a turbulent campaign.

Ange Postecoglou’s team are languishing in 13th place, with next week’s Europa League last 16 first leg against AZ Alkmaar the club’s sole focus to salvage the season.

Second youngest line-up
Haaland shot straight at Tottenham keeper Guglielmo Vicario in the opening minutes as City made a vibrant start.

He wasn’t to be denied for long as City took the lead in the 12th minute.

Jeremy Doku’s surge into the area opened up the Tottenham defence, with the Belgian’s cross put on a plate for the unmarked City striker to finish from six yards.

Doku threatened to double City’s advantage as he cut inside for a low strike that forced a good stop from Vicario.

Ravaged by injuries, Tottenham named their second youngest ever starting line-up in a Premier League match at an average age of 23 years 243 days.

Postecoglou’s youngsters found it impossible to stop City finding holes in their defence time and again.

Doku picked out Savinho five yards from goal but the Brazilian’s scuffed shot flew over when it seemed impossible to miss.

Haaland wasted a golden opportunity with a close-range strike that Vicario saved with his legs.

Tottenham nearly snatched an equaliser against the run of play just before half-time as Kevin Danso’s header was tipped over by Ederson.

City were exposed again early in the second half as Brennan Johnson’s teasing cross reached Wilson Odobert at the far post, but the forward poked wide from four yards.

Ederson had to scramble across goal to palm away Odobert’s deflected effort before it could loop into the net.

City had lost their way and Tottenham should have been level when Destiny Udogie found Mathys Tel in space, only for the teenager to shoot wastefully wide.

Postecoglou sent on Son Heung-min in the closing stages, but Ederson made a superb save to deny the South Korean before Pape Sarr headed over at the death as City held on.

Trump to sell ‘Gold card’ US visas for $5m

0

US President Donald Trump unveiled plans Tuesday to sell new “gold card” residency permits for a price of $5 million each — and said Russian oligarchs may be eligible.

Trump said sales of the new visa, a high-price version of the traditional green card, would bring in job creators and could be used to reduce the US national deficit.

“We’re going to be selling a gold card. You have a green card, this is a gold card. We’re going to be putting a price on that card of about $5 million,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

The Republican president, who has made the deportation of millions of undocumented migrants a priority of his second term, said the new card would be a route to highly prized US citizenship.

“A lot of people are going to want to be in this country, and they’ll be able to work and provide jobs and build companies,” Trump said. “It’ll be people with money.”

Sales of the cards would start in about two weeks, Trump added.

“We’ll be able to sell maybe a million of these cards. We have it all worked out from a legal standpoint,” Trump added.

The billionaire former real estate tycoon said that all applicants for the new gold cards would be carefully vetted.

But asked if wealthy Russians would also be able to apply, Trump said it was a possibility.

“Possibly. I know some Russian oligarchs that are very nice people. It’s possible,” Trump said. “They’re not as wealthy as they used to be. I think they can. I think they can afford $5 million.”

A number of Russian oligarchs have been hit by western sanctions since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine three years ago.

Trump has caused shock in European capitals by suddenly opening negotiations with Russia to end the war, amid fears that he could be willing to sell Ukraine short.

The US president told reporters that lifting sanctions on Russia was possible “at some point” but was not currently on the table.

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, standing at Trump’s side in the Oval Office, said of the gold cards that “we can use that money to reduce our deficit.”

Trump, who has branded a series of hotels and casinos in a long business career, even suggested the new cards could also be named after him.

“Somebody said, ‘Can we call it the Trump gold card?’ I said, ‘If it helps, use the name Trump,’” he said.
