Zamfara State representative, Sulaiman Gumi, has commended the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Abubakar, for his recent resignation, describing it as a ‘commendable’ decision.

Gumi, who represents Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency, acknowledged the severe security challenges facing the country, labeling them as overwhelming.

During an interview at the 2024 Humanitarian Award Night in Abuja on Saturday, Gumi reflected on Abubakar’s tenure. Appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018, Abubakar stepped down on Saturday, citing ‘personal and family issues.’

Gumi speculated that the persistent insecurity plaguing Nigeria might have played a significant role in Abubakar’s decision to resign. The son of the esteemed Islamic scholar, Sheikh Abubakar Gumi, emphasized that unlike many officials who hold onto power despite failing systems, Abubakar took the dignified route by stepping down.

He stated, “Dealing with the insecurity in Nigeria is enough to overwhelm anyone. If Abubakar resigned due to the enormity of the situation or his inability to manage it effectively, then he made the right choice. It’s a dignified action if that was indeed his reason. It’s essential for others who are capable to step in and address the situation. This is something we rarely see in Nigeria officials recognizing when it’s time to let others take over.

“There’s no justification for clinging to a position if one cannot deliver. The country needs capable hands to tackle these challenges. Abubakar’s resignation is a step in the right direction, and it’s a practice more Nigerians should adopt.”

“I also believe that with genuine commitment, our government and security agencies can bring an end to this crisis. It should be history if the will to act is present. However, the commitment seems lacking from both the government and law enforcement. How many of these bandits are we dealing with? We even know where they are located. So why haven’t we eliminated them?”

Gumi further expressed concern over the growing humanitarian crisis caused by the displacement of people across Nigeria. He urged Nigerians to assist the federal government by providing more temporary shelters and relief materials for those affected.

“There is a pressing need to enhance our policies because Nigeria is currently facing a humanitarian crisis. We can’t claim the government is doing enough whatever efforts are made, they’ll never be sufficient. Some people may be displaced today, and tomorrow it could be others.”

“This has evolved into a national issue and a significant humanitarian crisis. People are being forced out of their homes due to ongoing violence. I believe, to some extent, the government is overwhelmed by the situation. The worsening economic conditions only add to the intensity of the problem.”

“This is where individual contributions become crucial. We can’t leave everything to the government. Everyone must play a role in easing the suffering of our people. Additionally, the federal government should establish temporary humanitarian camps to house displaced individuals, instead of them being left to live in schools, shanties, and other unsuitable places.”

Emmanuel Anabueze, the organizer of the annual Humanitarian Award Night, echoed Gumi’s concerns. Anabueze emphasized that until governments at all levels cease politicizing policies, projects, and aid distribution, those at the grassroots will continue to bear the brunt of these crises.
