The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting following the police invitation of its National President, Joe Ajaero, on accusations of financing terrorism.

The NEC meeting is scheduled for 8am today, Tuesday, August 20, with all heads of affiliates and state chapters expected to attend.

The notice, titled “Notice of Emergency National Executive Council Meeting,” was issued by Emmanuel Ugboaja, the NLC Secretary General. It states, “Greetings from the congress headquarters. You are invited to an emergency hybrid NEC meeting on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at 8am, at Olaitan Oyerinde Hall, Labour House.”

Ajaero has been summoned by the police on charges including criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, serious felonies, subversion, and cybercrime. The invitation letter, dated August 19, 2024, and signed by ACP Adamu Mu’azu on behalf of the Commissioner of Police Intelligence, indicates that Ajaero’s name has emerged in ongoing investigations related to these allegations. The letter directs Ajaero to report to the IRT Complex at Abbattoir by Guzape Junction at 10 am today, with a warning of arrest if he fails to appear.

In related news, security forces conducted a raid on the NLC’s national headquarters in Abuja on July 7, claiming it was to uncover evidence against an international figure deemed a threat to Nigeria’s democracy. The NLC has since rejected the police’s explanation for the raid and has demanded the release of its detained members and seized documents. Additionally, the NLC has criticized government efforts to interfere with its internal affairs, including proposed changes to the tenure of trade union leaders.
