The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has exhumed the bodies of marine hunters from the Ministry of Internal Security and Inland Waterways, who were kidnapped, murdered, and interred by notorious criminals in Unyenghe, located in the Mbo Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement released on Friday by Police Spokesperson Timfon John, it was confirmed that the bodies were exhumed on Thursday after receiving credible information indicating that the hunters were killed and buried in shallow graves.
The Command conducted the exhumation on Thursday, August 29, 2024, after receiving information on August 18, 2024, regarding the burial of the abducted and murdered Marine Hunters in shallow graves within the community.
ASP John further reported that alongside the recovery of the bodies, the police have detained Chief Okon Asuquo Eteokpo, the Village Head of Utit Antai, who was allegedly the spiritual leader of the criminals, along with five other suspects.
Additionally, during the investigation, police recovered fifteen live cartridges from the criminals.
“Upon receiving this information, the Command’s operatives swiftly pursued the suspects and made several arrests,” the spokesperson stated.

“Following their apprehension, a combined team from the Command initiated a thorough search for the bodies, ultimately discovering them buried in shallow graves after hours of diligent effort, with their heads dismembered,” the PRO added.
She emphasized the Command’s dedication to eradicating crime and criminal activities in the state and urged the public to report any suspicious individuals or movements to the nearest police station at all times.
