A sense of unease permeated the scene as fire consumed part of the two-storey building at the Lagos State Government Staff Quarters on Odunsanmi Street, just off WEMPCO Road in the Ogba area.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early morning hours, around 2:20 am.
Sources indicate that one of the two-bedroom apartments in Flat 5 of Block 21—a three-storey structure containing 16 two-bedroom flats—sustained significant damage from the fire.
An initial investigation by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) found that the fire was caused by an electrical surge in the children’s room.
Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, reported that the blaze completely devastated the children’s bedroom, leading to property losses valued in the millions of naira.
The swift and coordinated response from the Agency’s Lagos Response Team (LRT), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service effectively contained and extinguished the fire.
“Fortunately, there were no fatalities or injuries reported as a result of the incident,” officials stated.
By 5 am, personnel from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASEMA, and Nigerian Police officers were still working to fully bring the situation under control.
