Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has stated that Nigeria is facing a crisis, with 38 million people on the brink of extreme hunger.
He criticized the administration of President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress for engaging in extravagant expenditures, which he claims have exacerbated the living conditions of Nigerians.
Obi highlighted several instances of wasteful government spending, including the purchase of a new presidential jet for $100 million, N21 billion allocated for renovating the vice president’s lodge, and N15 billion designated for constructing a clinic for the National Assembly.
“You cannot ask people to fast while you are feasting”, Obi added.
In an interview with News Central TV, Obi emphasized that the Federal Government must prioritize its limited resources to tackle critical development issues, including health, education, poverty alleviation, and security.
“From all records, Nigeria has 38 million people on the verge of extreme hunger; we are the poverty capital of the world. The two most critical areas that are giving us the crisis are human insecurity and food insecurity. To deal with this, we need to invest in agriculture to solve hunger, unemployment, and inflation,” Obi stated.
He also suggested the potential for a coalition with other opposition parties to help rescue Nigerians from hunger and rampant insecurity in the lead-up to the 2027 presidential election.
